DIY gold sparkle wrap for MIJ

Loading...

Hey all. I had some shells in the closet and thought I would finally try something that's been on my mind, which is making my own [cheap] gold sparkle wrap. Good for MIJ not really for high end drums.

So this is Dura-lar plastic sheeting, Recollections gold sparkles from Michaels Crafts, Krylon "triple thick crystal" clear glaze, and wood glue. The clear glaze goes on the plastic, the sparkles get dumped all over that, then shaken off [excess reclaimed], then let it dry, then coat the shell in wood glue, then apply, rough side down.

The wood glue dries hard to prevent lifting all over the place, it probably doesn't grab the plastic but certainly grabs the millions of sparkles glued to it. Contact cement was too rubbery for the relatively pliant Dura-lar....this I discovered on the bass drum! Should have started with the smaller tom shell...

I would have liked to use larger sparkles but this is Canada so I had to make a trip to the boonies just to get the extra fine stuff. I did mix it with some larger "grit" silver sparkle my dad had lying around [runs in the family!]. Anyway it looks better in real life, not so yellow, more champagne/bronze like.

It's relatively cheap and when done I will have a nice GS three-piece, 12", 16", 22".

Try this at home!

Thanks dudes. I will indeed let you know how it holds up. No bunching at the lugs yet, I put as much "upward" pressure on em as I could during assembly, so....

I'll just add I made a butt join in the wrap as I wanted only wood glue in play - the contact cement makes a mess of the sparkle/glaze combo.

Really do wish Canada was better for specialty stuff like this, I coulda got the bigger sparkles. I might have tried Krylon Glitter Blast, but Home Hardware can't even order it up here...

BTW I'm calling the finish "Belfountain Gold Mist"...because why not?

Nice work! Very cool idea. I'm another Canadian (and a Stewart) with an MIJ fetish that's always looking for an inexpensive wrap solution. Thanks! Now if I could find cheap heads on this side of the border...

Thanks again for the good words, guys.

I've got the "big piece" on the floor tom - Dura-lar sheet does not make it all the way around a 16X16 FT. You cannot coat the whole piece at once and add sparkles - the glaze dries too quick and sparkles all fall off! So I proceeded in about 6" sections, spray it on thick, and really cover the area in a heavy coating of sparkles. Luckily most of the sparkles are reclaimed in the 'shake-off' step - this includes shaking the sheet, gently banging/dropping the edge on the floor, and finally laying the piece out flat and running my hand over it to free up any loose bits [then repeat shake].

There is a small section of the [currently open] FT seam where the Dura-lar is separating from the layer of sparkles. I suppose this could happen to the whole surface over time. I'm hoping not!

Pics are at two different white balance settings to give an idea how it looks in different light. Neither picture is accurate unfortunately...
