DIY blue sparkle inlay

I was playing around with hoop inlay today on a Bollero kit that i'm restoring. I had some ugly white inlay that i painted metallic this morning for a test. Then I ended up near a craft shop and picked up some blue sparkles, spray adhesive and a clear sealer. After reading a recent post here( dang I can't remember members name) I wanted to try sparkes on a transparent film and glue those face down onto the hoop but I couldn't find any transparent material like that where I was. So I went ahead and glued the sparkles right to the old wrap, a couple of times then sealed it. It's drying now and looks promising. The pic with the blue sparkles is only the first sparkling of several. Fun in the sun flowers2

And here's a pic of the results. Not half bad, though much darker blue than the faded Bollero wrap. I'll definitely try this under transparent film next time.

Interesting idea! I heard of doing that trick with the sparkles and sealer but never saw an actual project. Thanks for posting the photos. As with any other kind of matching, how close you can come to the background color of the wrap will determine how good the match-up will be. Concentrate next time on nailing the base/background color.

Thanks John. I knew I wasn't going to get a match, just thought I'd run with some ideas I see around here just for the experience. I'll definitely try it under some clear plastic wrap next time and add some green to compensate for wrap fade. Glad you're fine after that nasty (apparently non-drum forum material Falling Do) hail storm. The Reading Railroad is a fond childhood memory of mine! Peace!

Dude, it's close enough for government work! Nobody else, especially anybody sitting out front, will notice any difference from hoop to shell. Nice job. Creative!

I had a set of Ludwigs where the rail mount had been forced down, and the bottom bolt had pierced the bass drum., Glued and clamped the wood. Used red glitter mixed with clear to fill in the defect. Great job!

The hobby stores should have a roll of clear laminate. Think it is made by 3M. There is also a clear for Zyron laminating machines. You just need the replacement cartridge. Spendy. Clear contact paper would work but it is thicker and has a bit of a haze.
