Hello all!

Just arrived, Slingerland 24x14 bass, Chicago badge, blue and silver duco, mahogany interior, nickle lugs and I assume nickle T's and claws and matching blue hoops with silver sparkle inlay, still intact. No spurs and an old school cymbal mount. I bought this with the intention of making a rock kit out of some other Slingerland orphan toms that I have. Now, here's the dilemma, this thing is way cool, I feel I will be doing an injustice if I re-wrap it or paint it. Duco is in great shape, edges are in great shape, hate to drill anymore holes. Some of the claws are a bit rusted and it has one mis-matched T and claw. Heads fit nicely. Not sure what to do, maybe someone may want to trade for something I could alter. I never was a fan of duco but this is pretty cool.

Can anybody set me on a path?

Oh, and by the way, this thing sounds killer!!!

I see a hard choice. I am with you, secretly, it is a terrible looking finish, to my eyes, and I know it is a part of history, but...uhg. If it is in good condition, you can do a temporary wrap. Like the Royce and Maxwin, only use tape at the seam. That would yield the result of a fine sounding drum and you won't have to "ruin" the drum by gluing the wrap. Tell you what, I have a thin 3 ply mahogany shell....nevermind, it is just an MIJ, but you know, this is one of those shells that booms, and since only you and I would know, I can send it to you for the cost of shipping. It is bare, no hardware, no wrap-ready to be whatever you like. It is just one of those things to get past, knowing in your heart is MIJ, but once you hear one of these old basses with proper heads and tuning, they blow the windows out!

I've been there. I purchased the WMP wrap and waited for the kit. I ended up picking up the 71 Slingerland 80N in Mahogany with the intent of popping the WMP on it. I drove it from Dallas back to Arkansas and set it up. That's when I realized just how sweet that finish was. It took quite a bit of work, but man, was it worth it.

I put the wrap aside and am still playing the snot out of that kit. Unreal sounds.

The WMP ended up covering a 6 ply Luddy that had a seriously bad Maple finish. It was shot beyond repair. I know 'cause I spent two weeks with a friend trying to fix it. Bad.

If your bass is nice, please don't do anything bad to it. Sell it/trade it here. One of us will clean it and get the hardware correct. It deserves better than a rock wrap. I learned my lesson.

Jonni, I appreciate the offer but by the time I acquire everything else I would need for that shell, well, you're looking at a couple hundred bucks and my anal retentiveness would get the better of me! The tape idea is a good thought!

Michael, That Buddy kit of yours is in very good shape and all the drums match. I have nothing to go with this drum that matches. As for a "rock wrap" I would do something that would keep the vintage vibe, maybe aqua sparkle or something period correct. I guess I am fishing for thoughts before I offer this up for trade.

Thanks

Here's a thought ...

Jaye!

He's got some cool shells that are orphans. He also does a great job with wraps. Check with him and maybe he can set you up with the bass you want and one of us (maybe him) will take that duco off your hands. Win/Win.

Yeah, I thought of him. Lets see what happens, I am not going to rush into anything. If anyone has a three ply Slingy that would want to trade I would entertain offers. I have to score some clamp on spurs and play this baby!
