I believe your behavior was improper. The woman very likely is merely ignorant; possibly stupid, and she may have been "jabbering" away loudly as an attempt to gain attention because she's lonely and feels unwanted. True, she interrupted your performance and the other audience members, but being oblivious to her surroundings and having undiagnosed steatopygia, in and of itself, does not mean she meant to do harm. It is highly likely that you greatly embarrassed her in front of her peer group, and you should feel embarrassed as well for not handling the situation in a more gentlemanly and professional manner. Or maybe ditch the Christian hymns from your repertoire so as to not appear hypocritical when you behave as rudely to others as they behave rudely to you. Please give thought as to how you might in the future better handle the occasional challenge to your professionalism. You asked - I answered.

I also agree with you..

I'm thinking that it's a purely (in the moment judgement call)...

Best to see if the band keeps you or replaces you as there drummer..

I say this tongue n cheek, but it happens...

Either way...hindsight is 20/20.....forgot about it & see what surfaces from yr bandmates.

From Matt M

I don't know if I would expect a lunch crowd at a senior center to be quiet and all pay attention to the music. It is a social time for them, and the band is kind of considered as background entertainment, and not necessarily the focus of the gathering.

Matt,

I think you hit the nail on the head. I've played lots of senior centers and outdoor park venues never knowing if each performance was supposed to be a "concert" performance (everyone quietly listening followed by applause) or simply background music (audience chatting and playing cards). Often, members of the listening audience are equally uncertain as to the nature of the performance and simply unaware that their behavior and socializing might be interfering with the band's performance or the audience's listening pleasure. I once had a very elderly gentlemen chat on and on to me about how he used to be a big band drummer in the 1940's, and he was telling me all this while I was in the middle of playing In The Mood!

I think the proper reaction to the problem posed in the opening post scenario would be to approach the big-bottomed chatterbox in between songs and politely inform her that her conversations might be interfering with the audience's ability to enjoy the performance. My :2Cents:

As entertainers , we have a obligation to the public to be neutral toward all personalitys from the big bottom girl to the heckler and so on , it a part of professionalism to be the best you can be up on stage and work through all the issues that arrive so on

"after playing star again up on the stage when you smoke the days last cigarette " you can say job well done I'm just saying ....

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Sorry, I'm with Bucky on this one... your response was inappropriate and confrontational. Doing it only made -you- feel better, everybody else was feeling awkward and uncomfortable. Your job was on-stage, making music, period. Unless someone assigned you the duty of playing cop and dealing with disruptive audience members, just do the job you are there to do.

That lady may not have only been rude and unaware, she might have been crazy and stabbed you in the eye with a pencil. No way to know going in, best to err on the side of caution. Mind-Your-Own-Business! Good rule!

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Working in a senior center is not an easy job. Bless her for talking to the folks that are not long for this world. Often left to spend their last days ignored. What is done is done.

Understanding/compassion in various surroundings should be key. Large bottom could very well be a medical condition. Will give the residents something to talk about :-)
