Yesterday,we were playing at the senior center for the lunch crowd. One of the workers is always in there hanging around ,dancing ect. Yesterday while we were playing "A closer walk with thee" she was talking to some people-leaning on the table with her big butt turned toward the trumpet players jabbering away-REAL LOUD-Then she went to another table big butt bent over talkin with some other people on a different table. Well after the 3rd song and her doing that ,I told the trumpet player to tell her to sit down or go back to her office. He wouldn't do that so ,I walked over and the whole place went silent-except big butt she was jabbering away. I hit the table with my sticks and politely said"we are trying to play some music here and the horn guys don't want to look at your badside anymore,if you want to conduct business go to your office" You could have heard a pin drop. Nobody talked to me after the gig,but Miss big Butt came over and apologized for about 5 minutes and promised not to do it again. In this politically correct world,I just don't care if I hurt someones feelings for being rude.. I believe your behavior was improper.

The woman very likely is merely ignorant; possibly stupid, and she may have been "jabbering" away loudly as an attempt to gain attention because she's lonely and feels unwanted. True, she interrupted your performance and the other audience members, but being oblivious to her surroundings and having undiagnosed steatopygia, in and of itself, does not mean she meant to do harm. It is highly likely that you greatly embarrassed her in front of her peer group, and you should feel embarrassed as well for not handling the situation in a more gentlemanly and professional manner. Or maybe ditch the Christian hymns from your repertoire so as to not appear hypocritical when you behave as rudely to others as they behave rudely to you.

Please give thought as to how you might in the future better handle the occasional challenge to your professionalism.

You asked - I answered.

I am not sure of the proper etiquette expected of the audience in this situation.

When people pay to go see a band, and the music is the reason for everyone being there, then talking during a performance is bad behavior.

I don't know if I would expect a lunch crowd at a senior center to be quiet and all pay attention to the music. It is a social time for them, and the band is kind of considered as background entertainment, and not necessarily the focus of the gathering.

Kind of like music at a party vs. music at a concert.

She could have been more considerate and spoken a little more quietly, and you might not have been so annoyed if her backside had been more to the bands liking.
