Dent repair on 1930 Ludwig super

Loading...

Hi guys and gals!

I just bought a 6.5x14” 1930 Ludwig super snare from a store online. It’s got original tube lugs but the strainer and hoops are later replacements fitting the original holes.

When I received the drum it turns to have a few more dents then the seller had disclosed in the original listing. Worst is a dent on the top bearing edge almost the size of a dime. I’m now trying to decide if I should return the drum or keep it and try to repair... I know these drums are a bit rare in 6.5 depth so that’s a reason to keep it, if these dents are fixable.

What do you guys say?

Cheers/

Jonas

I've edited my first reply due to the bearing edge dent. for the side dents remove the tube lugs so you can lay the shell flat, I use a double sided rubber mallet one side is soft one side is harder, Go easy with the strikes. Good luck,, But you may want to return it, was this dent not disclosed before hand?

Thanks vintagemore2000! I think the side dents could be fixed fairly easy, it’s the one on the bearing edge that really bugs me. The listing said:few small dings and scratches but they are not noticeable.

Well I beg to differ on that description...

Currently leaning towards a return.

A friend who’s a Backline tech as well as a maker of reproduction medieval armory(!) told me it might be possible to weld som kind of pin to the dent and use a glide hammer to pull it out.

Anybody done this?

I'm in agreement with the crowd over on the DFO, just send it back, This dent really is at the most critical place on a drum, they didn't disclose it.

Thanks to all of you for your thoughts and input! I’ve actually just returned the drum. Felt like the best option.

Happy new year to all of you!
