Too bad that you don't include a 1960's clean and all original vintage Slingerland or Leedy or Walberg & Auge or Rogers in the equation. In my opinion, every one of those four brands would be preferable to Ludwig or Gretsch. But, since you limit yourself to those two brands, I consider it to be a crap shoot.

I believe that 12x8 has classic lugs on it. The gap between the top and bottom lugs is too small. It should look like the drum on the left. If that's the case there will be anywhere from 12 to 24 extra holes.

It turns out the seller for with the Ludwig b/o badge wmp and blue oyster owns a drum shop. I called to inquire about those and asked if he had any other vintage kits. He told me this Ludwig wmp keystone badge kit had just come in and he had not listed it on his cl add yet.
After he sent pictures, the rest is drum purchase history!
