Cymbal rack for display and storage

Loading...

Hello,

I have quite a few cymbals (almost 100), and I am tired of keeping them in bags, and not knowing which cymbal is where etc (a nice problem to have, right?). I have seen wooden cymbal display racks that stack them sideways bell to bell (just like coins in a paper roll). I am thinking about making one myself out of PVC pipe. I am by no means a wood worker, and PVC would be a lot cheaper than wood. Plus, the plastic PVC isn't going to scratch or damage the cymbals at all. My concern is, would the PVC be stable enough to support the weight of the cymbals?

I also thought about (if I can get one cheap enough) a firewood rack. Those usually have two parallel bars on the bottom, about just right for standard cymbal sizes, with high ends to support all the firewood. These are usually metal. I could line the metal bars with felt or carpet, and perhaps cut the ends down so they aren't quite so high (and line them also).

Does anyone have any experience with this? Any good suggestions?

Thanks and Merry Christmas to all! Hope Santa left some cool drum stuff under the tree!

That's just a cracking idea!!!

I have seen PVC lawn furniture, so as long as you don't stack the cymbals too high (just one row deep) and use plenty of support, you should be fine.

I may have to try this for myself...

The idea seems good, but you don't have to build it from scratch. Just get some metal storage shelves like these. You can even buy pre-cut shelf liners for them.

Depends on the thickness of PVC you get. There is some flimsy stuff out there, and there is some super-sturdy stuff as well. I wouldn't make the entire rack out of PVC, though, like, with couplings and all...I would take a metal frame, or make one out of wood, and then put PVC on it as the padding for the cymbals. I would use some 1" dowels for the cymbal supports (with PVC covering it), supported on either end AND the back by some cross-braced pieces of wood.

Thanks for the input everyone!

I found this firewood rack at Home Depot for $40. It is 45" long, and by the measurements it looks like 12" and larger cymbals will fit on the parallel bars.

(It's the Pleasant Hearth 4 Ft. Log Rack-Model LS002R all the way down on the right on Page 1).

I ordered one and it should be here next week. I bought 1" pipe insulation (the kind you wrap around copper hot water pipes-almost like those "Noodles" that you play with in the pool) for padding. If it ever gets torn up, it's easy and cheap to replace. I'm not sure how tall the sides are, but I could always cut them down, as my biggest cymbal is a 24".

Once I get it, I'll take some pictures with it loaded up!

Happy New Year to all!

Guy is asking $495?

There was a guy here selling them for $50!

Yeah, I saw that. Crazy! I wonder if he is the same guy that is selling the Vintage New In Box Buddy Rich Slingerland Drumsticks (6 pair) for only $999.95!

I thought about those as well, but those would take up a lot of room to only dispaly a handful of cymbals. Plus, how the heck would you ship one of those things?
