Usually one would remove the base pole. Cut off the bottom or top of the base pole at 1 point only, and then reassemble.

FYI: The math and legs folding up straight "CHANGES" when altering the lengths.

You need to take off the top ring piece off of the base tube.

The part (ring) with the tightener bolt in it.

It is machine pressed on.

Take the top basket tube out.

Turn base upside down and gently hit the bottom of the tightener ring (from the bottom side) till it slides off of end the tube.

Tape up sides of tube as hammer will be sliding on it.

I don't think there are any set screws holding tightener ring on.

It is just pressed on.

Use a block of wood to hit against bottom side of tightener ring and work that thing off as you hit it with a hammer.

Once off,

Cut tube to desired length.

Then re-install tightener ring back on tube.

Set the piece on concrete with a towel and use the wood block to bang it back on. Put a piece of aluminum tape on end (as a shim) to make it tighter before banging back together.

Make sense?

OR....Just keep this nice original Slingerland stand the way it is,

and buy a new snare stand for a deeper snare.

I like the cool streamlined look of those old stands.

Leave em be and buy another stand for your 8" deep SN.

I think I'm going to leave as is and try to sell the set of hardware. I put a DW ultralight basket into a Gibraltar flat based bottom and it's great ...low enough to use my Ludwig coliseum with my 16" bass drum and 12" rail mounted.

If I decide to keep Slingy hardware I'll use your idea, someone else at DFO did same thing
