Cutting a bass drum head

Loading...

Hi all

Back with another question. Any suggestions how to cut a hole in my XP 8 bass drum head. It’s a 22” and the white CS dot is like 9.5” in dia. I believe this is the last one in existence and came with the set, so I’d like to use it. The “dot” had a small hole in it and was worn pretty good. I tried to patch it, I think it turned out okay, but I can see the difference. And that bothers me. This was used as the batter head by previous owners. I’ve seen some of the XP 8 reso heads with the large dia hole in them, and thought, why not? That looks pretty cool. I could just cut around the black outline of the white dot!! Problem is, I don’t have a real steady hand. I’ve tried cutting heads with an Exacto in the past, but the results were horrible. Any ideas how to remove without cutting (????). Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

All the dots I have are held on by friction,..you can peel them off. If it came from the factory on the head, you should be able to peel it off.

Thank you sir...

The hole thingy is cool and all, but only for single ply heads. If you have something like an Emperor batter, good luck.

Exactly - You're never going to be able to replace that head, so why cut it?

The Rogers logos are widely available, so use whatever head you like on the drum but preserve the original head.

just my $.02

Thanks buddy. You're probably right. I can live with the head that's on there for now. I was trying to avoid buying the "sticker", wanting to use the original. But, I may have to go that route. Or wait until I see one come up on Reverb or eBay...if ever...

Thanks all for the replies, i appreciate it!

I do. Have no issues with it either.

I'm guessing once you cut holes, muffle with felts strips, use those big clamp on external mufflers, etc., there probably isn't going to be much difference between a single or double ply. I don't know this as fact, just a guess.
