Custom Orphan Marching Drums Mini-kit

This week I started a new project. It's a small commission. On internet market I bought 3 marching drum with wooden hoops. I'm taking of paint/wrap, sand them, re-cut bearing-edges to make the drum louder. It is is going to be a mini-kit for small venues/light gigs. The shells will be stained dark wood and the hoops will be all natural. Sizes are 12 inch pre-int (tom), 14 inch (floortom), 16 inch bass. See pics.

The 14 and 16 inch drums have all-ready arrived. They both appeared to have very thin maple shells, a pleasant surprise.

I will keep the proces updated.

I bought them on internet market. Prices varying from 15 to 40 bucks. It's some kind of lottery actually. Buying them blindly,, having them sended, sand them and see what kind of wood, quality, etc. The 12 inch still has to be sended.

Dutch: Marktplaats.nl

a lot of people from the south play marching drums during "carnaval", a yearly roman catholic happening. They play on aything they can get their hands on, because it's just for fun. They sell their old stuff when they get serious with it.

What country are you from?

Most of the time I search simply for "drum" (In Dutch "trommel").

Oh I see! I've been to the Netherlands several times and I have heard of marktplaats.nl too, very nice site, great prices hehe

I'm from Slovenia, a country with no real drumming tradition. Before world war two the only drums were ones who came from marching bands and if there were any, they were probably made in Austria or maybe Germany. In socialism, the most common drums were Amati (have a set from them) from Czechoslovakia and Tacton or Trowa (have one snare) from East Germany. I don't think Yugoslavia (what Slovenia was under) ever made any of it's own drums. I certainly never heard of any /: Even Amatis and Tactons are rare today and the rest is mostly cheap chinese crap from after the 90's. I got my Amati drumset online on a slovenian website, and it was quite a good deal I think since I got a massive set with 8 toms, the bass and the snare, the original snare stand and another noname snare stand, all the original Amati tom stands, and a 90's Yamaha double pedal and hihat stand. For 180€ in Slovenia it was quite a good deal :D But it was all in a bad shape and I'm still working on it. The Tacton snare I bought on ebaykleinanzeigen.de from Germany for 30€ I think.

Cleaned and sanded the 14 and 16 inch. Picking up the 12 inch next weekend. The project got changed a little: I managed to score an 18 inch marching drum matching the others. So this will be the bass drum, the 16 inch will become a second floortom.

A problem arised: Before buying I asked the seller of the 16 inch tom to check if a 16 inch head would fit. He claimed it would. However, the shell seems to be a little too big, 41 cm. precisely. Normal heads won't wit. Not even a vintage a head. Bummer. I decided to slim it down on a table router, but, because the re-ring is thick but undeep, that would seriously affect the drum's structure. Ring might fall or break off. So I decided to deepen the re-ring (see pics).

I want this kit to look very old school but possible to use with modern heads.
