Current projects in the works

As part of a larger project, I am photographing several collections of "ancient" style rope tension drums. I have been granted permission to photograph collections in a few museums as well as some pretty impressive private collections. A museum that is close to my heart is one that is right here in Connecticut, The Company of Fifers and Drummers museum. In exchange for being allowed to photograph their collection I am assisting them in cataloging all of their drums and drum related items both on display and in the archives.

As a bonus to all of this, my friend Ellis Mirsky has offered me the opportunity to write a blog about the journey that I have undertaken, on his site, fielddrums.com I hope you will all take a moment to read the first posting on his site about some of the first drums that I have pulled off display to photograph. The second installment on the blog should be posted on Monday or Tuesday.

Matt,

I don't think the CFD museum could have entrusted this project in better hands. You are the rope-tension guy here in the heart of Fife & Drum country. I just read your blog post on the start of the project and look forward to more installations. Your restorations and builds always make for interesting posts. I'm still getting compliments on the drums you made for the GFG:

And by the way, thanks for getting that new Kevlar head on my 16x16; HUGE improvement over the Remo Fiberskyn. I used it just last week in Niantic for a concert performance of John Williams' Hymn to the Fallen (the theme from Saving Private Ryan). It sounded so perfect for that piece that I should have recorded it.

Keep us all updated on your current and future projects.

Mike

Matt great reads thanks. Amazing history. The notes and tags inside the drums really tell the story of each! Is this a common thing to find? Keep up the great work.

Glenn.

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

Glenn, yes, it is common for there to be notes written on the inside of the drum or extra labels from different shops indicating repairs or general maintenance such as new heads. This is a nice because it gives you the history and story of the drum. In some cases though, you find a lot of information and this is what makes some of those older drums so valuable, both financially and historically.

Well, once again time has gotten away from me and it's been a while since I have posted here. As you will see below, the restoration work has been all over the board, starting with this one.

The first one I have to share is this 14"x14" snare drum that is most likely a Middle Eastern made drum. The owners son had been using this drum for reenactments but getting flack from other reenactors because of the white ears and tennis racket like snare cord.

So I made new ears for the drum, removed those little brass plated feet and put actual gut snare cords on the bottom of the drum.

A customer came to me with a pair of timpani that he picked up at a tag sale for about $150. The timpani had no head and one of them had been painted black over top of the copper bowl.

There were also a lot of dents in the bowl as well. I spent quite a bit of time with a rubber hammer, gently knocking the dents out

After I got the dents out, it was time to go to work to get the paint off the bowl, a process that took about 5 hours with a 3M wheel that was soft enough to use without ruining the shell. Unfortunately, using different chemicals and strippers wasn't an option because they will permanently discolor the copper.

These are going to be practice timpani and not used for live performances since he has a separate set of timpani for concerts so he only wanted to go just so far and stay within a budget. The stripping of the bowl took a bit longer than expected but once I started I was pretty much committed and had to keep going. I ended up repainting the legs and base black since the legs are basically a pot metal but the end result looks okay. The heads are Remo Renaissance timpani heads.

The timp on the left is a Ludwig and the one on the right is a WFL.

One last project for now. This premier APK kit belongs to a customer of mine, he loves the kit and doesn't want a new one but has always wanted a red sparkle kit. I suggested red glass glitter and showed him a sample and he loved it. So here is the before, during and after shots.

Stripped down all of the drums and removed the badges

12" and 13" toms put back together.

A couple shot of the kit on a gig on delivery day. He plays as a 4 piece so the 13" tom is not pictured.

I wish the pictures actually did justice to the way this wrap looks under lights.
