I want to UPS a 20/16/12 kit including a snare from the east to west coast USA. I want to give the buyer an estimated cost without having to lug the drums to a UPS store. Basically, I want someone at the store to box it using their supplies and ship. Has anyone done this recently and can you estimate a total cost? Thanks!
Cost of Shipping?
I took a 10-12-14-22 Yamaha RC kit to a UPS store last year to get it measured for some boxes. While I was there, I asked for them to do the whole thing. I don't remember exact figures, but they wanted around $225 to handle everything from California to the Midwest. I did it myself for around $160 using my own boxes and packing material.
Any shipper will want to know how much it weighs and how big the box(es) will be.

I would suggest Fed Ex. I used to always pay over $200 to ship drums and could never figure how everyone else did it for $120 etc. Well, I opened a Fed Ex acct. and the prices are well south of $200. Be careful using your own boxes though. You may have a nice big box that can fit more than your bass drum in it. I found out the hard way that larger boxes are priced disproportionately.

A complete set with a snare in one box is a tall order. Wide too and very heavy. I'm thinking you'd overpay. I haven't shipped across the country for a while, but the last time was probably a $150 expense packing them myself using a bass box from Guitar Center and floor tom box from Home Depot or U-haul. You have to be careful not to have anything sticking out close to the box edge like spurs or mounts. You will pay a significant premium to have the agents pack them. Always go heavy on insurance!!!
Good luck.
What is amazing is that I had a car shipped from CA to FL for just $900 and the drum set is potentially a $200 cost. Go figure.
Ah, that's interesting. I'm surprised, because you know they are trying to combat the back strain of the employees. It must mean they figure in using a different vehicle with a dolly or something.
Thanks for the comments everyone.
i've never shipped a set but had no idea it'd be so expensive
