My 69 Ludwig keystone hoop is 1.75 to the outside of the round, and I would say semi gloss or satin.but I'm no expert. I would think gloss would be too glossy

It is a nice satin on my original 68 Hollywood as It’s a true time capsule been in cases in a environment all this time none nicer and in very minty shape so I’ve looked close and am in awe but yes old satin but understand gloss is measured by angular sheen and there are vetting degrees of reflection but this is a true satin

I've always used a satin finish when refurbing bass hoops with good results.

I've got a late 1966 kit, and an early 1969 kit - both with 22" bass drums. I am not the original owner of either, and I was surprised to see that 1 hoop on each kit is 1 3/4" wide, while the other hoop is 1/8th inch shorter (1 5/8") on the 1966, and 1/16" shorter (1 11/16") on the 1969. Both hoops have some wear.

As for the original finish, mine have been touched up repeatedly over the decades, but - looking at them closely - I agree that satin is probably the best description...appearing semi-gloss in the right light.

And one more measurement....I've got a known 1976 kit, and the bass drum hoops are wider than 1 3/4". I'm calling them 1 14/16".

As someone posted earlier, the hoops were apparently made wider in the early to mid 1970s. I have no idea why. Does anyone know?

And then, (apparently) the change was made to the Speed King, whereas the "spacer" (on the forward side of both "goal posts") was shortened, to allow the Speed King to sit at the same distance from the batter head.

Hoops were originally painted in lacquer. They did not polish the finish which resulted in a satin look. I still use spray can lacquer when redoing hoops. You can still find real lacquer in spray cans in clear, black, and white at most home centers.
