Constantinople & Istanbul Zldjians: Value/Era?

Loading...

I recently bought a beautiful 1965 Ludwig which came with a full set of 1960s Avedis Zildjian cymbals. It also included two Turkish made cymbals, a 11" Constantinople splash, and a 13" Istanbul splash.

The guy selling them thought they could be about 100 years old. I've done a little reading just now and trying to figure it out. If anyone can help identify what era these would be from, and what value they might be worth, I'd be most grateful. The 11" is pretty badly damaged, but maybe its still worth something? Here's some photos...

wow, looks like you have some origional k's

I don't know much about vintage cymbals but I do know the vintage k's are highly coveted. If it's a K zildjian and it's made in turkey you have something you probably want to keep. Especially the 13", no key holes or cracks! Very nice. As for monetary value, check ebay for a reference or wait till someone who knows their ish replies to this. I would guess at very least 300 for the 13". But that's purely uneducated speculation.

nice find!

Yeah, I'm pretty amazed to think about the age of these. When the guy told me he had some 100 year old splash's with the kit, I thought I would sell them as I've never liked or used splashs.

I've only recently been moving towards (untrained) jazz drumming, and using my kit for sound-art/sound-track music as opposed to rock/heavy pop etc, and now I actually love the sound of these little guys, even the broken one!

I'm not entirely sure what I'll do with them though. I know I need to recoup a little, I went a bit crazy and over-spent while I'm trying to save. I'll definitely do some recording with them before I let them go.

The 13" is in such good nick I don't want to damage it. If I can figure out the era and true value of it, I may relax and use it more, or sell it to someone who really wants it for their collection.

Both of these are for sale if anyone is interested. I'm not advertising or listing on ebay (at least not yet), but will happily discuss a private sale with anyone interested.

Agreed on the Istanbul. It appears to be a Type IIa old stamp based on Bill's older chronology. I wonder where he would place it based on his more recent research.

With regard to the constantinople, I also have Bill's chronology for constantinoples which he had posted on Cymbalholic from around 2004. However the copy I have only gives a date range for the Type I constantinople. Although Bill has descriptions for the Type II to IV, there are no date ranges for these types on my copy. Do you know where those dates are available?

Hey thanks for the replies. I don't have a set of scales to weigh the cymbals but I will try to get one, I need them for cooking anyway!

Are the time-lines you refer to still available? I'm interested in doing some reading.

Not sure, but I'd be glad to scan mine into PDF files and email them to you. I have three chronologies. One for Old Instanbul K's, one for Constantinoples, and one for Avedis Zildjian. Bill Hartrick (Drumaholic) indicated there are some flaws in the original timelines and is in the process of revamping them. However I believe most of Bill's original assumptions are still correct.

That'd be much appreciated BosLover! I'll send you my email address. Hoping to weigh the 13" (and all my other cymbals) by the weekend.
