COB Dynasonic Question

Loading...

Hey Rogers gurus! I'm hoping you can help a Luddy guy out here. I have a chance to grab a 60's COB Dynasonic with the snare rail removed and converted to standard type wires. I've never had a complete Dyna in front of me to be able to really assess how complicated they are or aren't. My questions are as follows:

- What would be a fair price for the drum? I'd give it an 8.5/10 on appearance, and it seems complete other than the snare conversion.

- What would it cost to get all the correct parts to put it back to original specs and are these parts readily available? Is it a tough job to convert it back?

- Is it worth just keeping it as-is and playing it? Do they still make a nice / viable drum once converted?

- Should I just run far away and just look for a complete one?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated Help2

I'm not a Rogers Guru by any stretch of the imagination but I do own two Dynas. Without the frame and wires in good shape around $200. The snare frames are available occasionally on ebay they bring a price of around $75. Original wires are far rarer then the frame and bring top dollar. Puresound makes a decent replacement. Putting them together and tuning them is pretty easy. IMHO they don't sound as good without the frame. Hope this helps I'm sure the experts will correct any misinformation I provided.

I would buy frames and original wires together for 75 bucks every day of the week, if I could swing the cash.

100 is a great deal. 125 is a good price. 150 ....... oK, but high.

1961-64... maybe 200 and youve been lucky.

Several years ago I bought one like this off of ebay going in blind, not knowing a whole lot about the Dynasonic. I bit the bullet and purchased the correct parts to bring it back to original specs. Mine was a later Fullerton era, so I went with the short frame that Al Drews sells on Ebay, and got the later one piece lower hoop as opposed to the one with the removable "tin" guards. I also used the Puresound snare wires for the Dyna. I gotta tell you, it was like night and day. The drum sounded ok without the snare frame, but wasn't crisp by any means. My goto supraphonic was more crisp sounding than the Dyna was.....Until.....I put it back to original specs and set it up properly. Once I understood what the designers were trying to accomplish with their design, and how to set it up properly, the whole snare frame idea made perfect sense!

And WOW! What a glorious sound it made! (And this coming from a longtime Ludwig fan!) Super responsive, and crisp! Now, I was restoring this one with intent to sell from the outset. I did sell it, for a slight profit at the time (it needed new lugs too) but I wish I had kept it. Now these are going through the roof, so they are a bit out of my price range.....

Moral of the story from one Ludwig guy to another.....put the drum back to original, you won't be disappointed! ;)

Thanks for the advice guys! It looks as though he's wanting a bit too much for it, so I'm trying to work out a trade deal if possible. Failing that, I'll try to find a complete one at a decent price.

How will a dynasonic compare to a Ludwig Supersensitive? I lucked out last year and fell bass ackwards into a COB supersensitive (cut B/O badge), thinking it was a ludalloy model, only to be pleasently surprised! I'm loving that drum, and I can only imagine that a Dyna would be at least as nice.

This is going to become my next obsession, I'm sure...

Dynasonic snares dont have a snare bed, so dont work very well at all without the snare frame IMHO.singer
