COB Cleaning- Suggestions

Loading...

Hi,

I've read the page on here, and I am still having trouble with something which kinda resembles a Calcium build up. I don't want to use anything too harsh to scrub at it, but it kills me that this shell has cleaned up SO well, and I'm this close to it being a perfect clean.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Kevin

Where is this being stored that you're getting this kind of buildup on metal? This is very odd. I've only seen this on drums stored in the basement and drums cleaned with an acid-based solution. Can you be specific on the exposure?

I should get the 'before' picture up here, because in the cruddy photo I was looking at when deciding to buy it this past week, I assumed it was an acrolite.

The guy had the kit in his basement for more than a year, he bought them from a 90 year old lady who's husband died a few years before, he said they were in her basement as well.

Heads, snares, and everything was all original to the drum. SO I doubt it has ever been taken apart before, or even cleaned.

Any suggestions on this?

If you 've got the hardware off of it (looks like you do from the photo) then I would get some baking soda powder and a soft toothbrush and a little water- make a thick paste and gently brush/scrub the whole drum with the paste, rinse in a water bath and dry it thoroughly with a soft towel and a hair dryer. A soft tooth brush and baking soda don`t scratch and work nicely. That`s my method and worked nicely for a 30 year old Pearl COB.

Had a feeling this might have been a basement drum. Obop has a nice

idea. Your going to have to counteract the minerals that have made their way to that shell through a long exposure to the damp underground air. You can use baking soda or some other active cleaner. This is not a soap and water clean. That won't remove the small bits. Think acids and bases as you experiment. Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions OsakaBop and Mcjnic, I will be trying the baking soda and toothbrush.

Here are some before shots.

Once I get the rest off, any suggestions for a final shine?

Eagle 1 Chrome wheel cleaner and a soft sponge. Spray on the eagle one, let it soak for a few minutes then rub it with the sponge and rinse. Do small sections at a time. Final polish with Turtle wax chrome polish and rust remover, small sections with an old soft tshirt.
