club date tuning

Loading...

I'm currently cleaning up/restoring a BOP Club Dates for a friend. They've been sitting on an enclosed, but non climate controlled, front porch. Pretty nasty!! They are cleaning up ok though. The lug casing are pitted pretty bad from the humidity but the are shining good after polishing.

Bass is a 20", rack 12", 14" pioneer snare and an added 16" floor tom. The 16 has a white muffle and the others red. Serial #'s put the 16 at about 1967. The others are in the 1964 range.. anyhow...

Cant wait to hear them tuned up when I'm done!!

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

If it's an 18" OBP bass drum... call, Steve Maxwell! You hit the Lotto!!! Kiss

Hey guys what kind of heads are you using on these? I am almost to that point and I believe the original Ludwigs were 10mil coated.

Thanks for the tip! I normally always go the G2 over G1 route. I have some left over G1's from a clinic. Do you use the same for your bass drum also?

I've had this discussion with Mike Layton and we both agree that, the best sounding heads for Ludwig drums are the ones which came with the drums! The Ludwig heads are just perfect. I don't know how much difference there is between Ludwig made drum heads and everybody else's, but there -is- a difference. Vintage Ludwig drums just sound best with vintage Ludwig heads. Punto.

For the bass drum I was leaning toward the stock heads that Lawton sells. I don't like logo heads though so I was going to try the coated versions:

No. BD20RC ------------$34.00

The price is very nice also. I have to go through my heads but I usually keep a stock of Evans so I like to use what I have first.

I realize this is an old thread... But!.. I must say, I absolutely love my 66/67 Club Date blue sparkle kit I got from Surface (Nevin)! I currently use coated ambassador for the 12 and 14 toms, coated powerstroke 3 on the kick, and a controlled sound -x (bought by accident but worked out nicely) on the jazzfest snare.

What I have found is that the floor tom sounds fantastic at nearly any tuning. I have settled on a medium to lower tuning I would say. This drum just sings!

With the 12" rack, I was having a lot of problems with tuning it at first when mounted on the rail mount. Sounded great off the mount, but as soon as you put it on there, drum choked off drier than the Sahara Desert! You could actually feel the resonance be absorbed into the rest of the bass drum and into the BD pedal. I opted to purchase a RIMS mount I found on ebay for really cheap, and this fixed the problem. Although it takes away from the vintage look, it sure does make this drum sound fantastic! I've gotten used to the look of it, so it's not much of an eye sore to me any longer.

Overall, this has become my favorite set of drums that I own. They look absolutely fantastic and sound the same!

I am so glad that I forked the money to purchase these back in December. Walking
