Cleaning vintage wrap

Loading...

Hey,

This is my first post here and I'm really looking forward to learning more about vintage drums. I finally bought my first vintage kit recently and I wanted to get a few tips on cleaning it. It's a players kit, but it's still in good shape. I just want to clean it up a bit and get everything looking good. The main question I have is about the wrap. It 70's Ludwig in blue oyster pearl, a.k.a. bowling ball, and I was wondering the best way to clean and/or polish it. I've looked at Groove Juice and stuff like that, but I just wanted to make sure it would be safe to use on a vintage wrap. Or if there's something that would be better and safer to use. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Hey! Welcome!

Cleaning wraps is a common question here. If you do a search of the past threads, you should come across several.

In the meantime, keep in mind the wrap is basically a plastic - long carbon chains. So, avoid any type of caustic chemicals and things that would break those bonds - i.e. damage the wrap.

Simple plastic cleaners are good. You should always test in an inconspicuous area before proceeding. Once you have your "dirt remover" nailed...remove all the hardware from the shell. Give the shell a good cleaning. Then use a nice wax to really give it a luster. I use Turtle Wax on mine. It works just fine. There are others here that swear by their choices. Experiment and find what you like. You should also clean the hardware while you have it off the shell. There are threads here for that, also. Keep in mind, it's most likely chromed steel. So, find you choice of chrome cleaner and go to it. Don't forget to relube.

Good luck and ask any questions you might have. That's what this forum is all about.

You asked, I think also, if Groove Juice would be safe to use on the wrap. I would say no, it's made for cleaning high quality bronze cymbals, and has "organic acid detergents" according to the label. Not for use on drum wraps I would think. The front of the bottle reads "Not Recommended for Cleaning Drum Shells".

Darn good question, you may have just saved someone else from heading down a bad road!

Good catch, Kevin.

You know, my Groove Juice comes from fruit grown in Florida...the citrus kind, that is.

Only the finest for our drumming products... LOL

When I was living in Florida, I always wondered why there was so little orange juice for sale there that was actually from Florida.... most of it was from Mexico.

True Fact

I lived in a couple locations around the Miami area. All of them were near a grove. I purchased my juice from the groves. It was fresh and very tasty. I miss that...but that's the ONLY thing I miss about that place.

Yep, too far south for me too... I was on the Panhandle, much safer.

Well... after searching the forums, I found MANY suggestions. It seems like Novus is a pretty popular choice, and I think I'm going to try that. Like I said, they're in pretty good shape already, but I just want something to polish up the shells and give them a good shine. And it seems like Novus is easy to use, too, which is a plus. Thanks for the heads up on the Groove Juice, Kevin. Glad I didn't try that.

Any sort of car vinyl polish/cleaner also works very well.

Actually, while Groove Juice IS a cymbal cleaner...I have heard other drum folks say it works on wraps...I dunno, never tried it. But I have heard of that before...

And McJ....I am very glad to hear you stopped drinking Groove Juice....says right there on the front of the bottle "Not recommended for cleaning drum shells. Not recommended as a breakfast beverage."
