Cleaning Ludwig & Ludwig Rims

I’m trying to clean up my old Ludwig & Ludwig Elkhart snare drum. I think the rims are nickel plated brass. I tried to clean them up with some simi chrome but they are so dirty or oxidized that the rag turns black immediately. Any guidance on cleaning nickel plate will be appreciated.

I would go at it with Mothers Mag cleaner first to get off the majority of crud, then follow up with a buffing wheel. After that Cape Cod Cloths
