I am going to repaint the chewed up finish on my 50's Slingerland hoops, should I get some sort of gasket to go between the claws and the freshly repainted hoops so they don't get chewed up again? Are there any premade ones available or do you have to custom make them?

Is it ok to run the claws with nothing under them? just metal on wood?

Don't worry about gaskets they just impede your tuning,
Just set them up where you want them, (I mark the underside of the Shell, Hoop & Head with a fine textra pen for future changes of heads etc..)
However, the hoops will probable need doing again.. (In another 60 years or so)..
