Citrus Mod /Mach Lug / Blaemire kit

Loading...

This is a newly completed Ludwig Tribute kit, using vintage A.F.Blaemire fiberglass shells.

This is my third Ludwig Tribute kit.

I have always liked Ludwig's Citrus Mod wrap (I am a child of the Psychedelic 70"s) and I have been wanting to do a kit with Mach Lugs. When I got the group of 14 Blaemire fiberglass shells that I have been selling here, I started to sell the 12-16-22 as a unfinished shell pack. But just as I started getting interest in them, I realize I wanted to do this project for myself. I had planed on selling this kit...but of course things change. I love the way it came out and I am now playing in the 70's funk band. This kit has the perfect wrap for that era and music.

Ludwig never used Mach lugs and Citrus Mod together, but this is more of a custom "one off" than a era specific replica.

I have a a set of custom badges coming that will replace these Ludwig restoration badges. I really wanted to have them for these shots...but I found out yesterday that it may be a couple more weeks. I will post them here when I get them. They are interesting....to say the least. They are coming from JM Smith Custom. Joshua did a great job on this badge for me.

I love building these hybrid, Ludwig/Blaemire kits. They look good and sound outstanding!!

Looks fantastic! Can you mention something about your roller machine? That caught my interest. I want to branch out from re-covering snare drums and having a roller would build my confidece with the larger drums. I have 2 kits waiting for me...Car Driving2 Here is my most recent re-wrap.

Your style looks familiar. Do you have an Orange Mod kit posted on JamminSam's website? I'm certain that was yours. It inspired me! Cool1

I have a 22-16-13 Ludwig Keystone '69 that wants to wear Orange Mod wrap. Here is the pioneer snare that will go with it (my 1st re-wrap and everything that could challenge me did exactly that). Whatever notes you have about that OM wrap install would be quite helpful! Citrus Mod is the only psych/oyster color I haven't tried yet.

Hey wadsmoe

Yes...that is my Mod Orange kit on JS. Sam called me on Friday and told me the Citrus Mod kit will also be up soon.

The the wrap press is one I got from a forum buddy. I can put you in contact with him if interested. It ran me about $650 shipped (heavy).

I have wrapped close to a 50 shells with it and I can't imagine not having it.

The MO and CM wraps are a little thicker than some wrap out there, but it is very easy to work with. I use a glue (3M fastbond 30-NF) that most builders use. JS will sell his wrap with tape already applied if you like. I find that the shells resonate more when glued. If you glue...there is a trick that can be used to take the wrap off if you make a mistake (bubbles..ripples etc). I have done that only a couple of times...but it is a life saver if you are using rare wrap, which I have done in the past.

Your wrap on the snare looks great! I am sure you could do a kit....it just takes patience.

Good luck

BTW...the "trick" is to use Naptha (home depot) just open the seam a hair and start painting (with a brush) the Naptha in between the wrap and the shell. The wrap will come off like butter. Then air dry and start over.

That is a very helpful hint for stripping the old wrap. I think getting the wrap nicely square to the shell is the hardest part(without having it loose in a spot & tight elsewhere).. I've tried Sam's Method and Precison's method and have to say I like both results, but tend to agree that the gluing shell & wrap improves the integrity. That's where the wrap press would give a nice factory result. You can send me PM about wrap press when you have time. Thanks!

Actually, the Naptha will only work on glue that has just been applied to the shell/wrap. This helps if you need to move the wrap or start over as you are wrapping.

BTW, I just wanted to give this post a bump, as I saw this kit being built from it's inception. Jerry really does some awesome work, and I just love his creativity on these Ludwig/Blaemire tribute kits.

Thank you for clarifying that! I 'd like to maybe salvage the blue sparkle that's being peeled off; but that itself is a re-wrap which is why it got chosen to get some new pajamas. Already bought the Naptha(the guys at home Depot just looked at me like "HuNH? wut's that?"DOH; and I'll keep the chemical handy for extreme measures.Yes Sir

If the blue sparkle is a re-wrap and it is not a very old re-wrap...go ahead and try the Naptha anyway. I have used it on re-wraps that were almost a year old and it worked just fine. Take your time and let it set in a little bit before you start pulling (maybe a minute or so) It will not hurt to try.

Good luck.
