Choosing my first vintage set

Loading...

Hi guys !

I'm new to this forum and a total newbie in vintage stuff (and i'm polish so exuse all my language mistakes).I'm a guitarist but i also play drums a lot.I've been playing a tama imperialstar kit with awful sounding cymbals(you know,as for a guitarist ,this set was cheap and fun to play) and since i got my home recording studio i decided to get myslef some vintage drum kit because i need to take this serious and i love the vintage woody, dark tone.I have no idea which drums sound good and which do not so here's where i need your help ! http://www.guitarcenter.com/Drum---Percussion,Condition-Vintage.gc?ipp=25&o=1 i found some pretty interesing kits in their offer(they offer great prices for vintage sets) but since they have no descriptions and detailed pics i can't do any research on the sets i like ... my budget is something about 1200$ (in poland it's 4000PLN which is a big amount of money) for the whole set : i'm looking for a set that includes a bass drum, two toms (TT and a FT) and a snare drum.Cymbals are optional(i mean i can somehow get some extra money and buy them later),i found a nice jazzy ride on polish ebay and i'll do some research on some hats.As for the shell set i could post links to what i like but i'd end up posting every 3/4-piece set for under 1200$ .I like leedy/ludwigs,rogers and slingerlands but i have no idea which of them are good sounding kits (and they have no 3-piece rogers .i could buy a 4-piece set but i hate playing 3 toms ,it looks awful and i rarely use all of them)...As for the snares i heard that ludwig supraphonics are great and there's lot of them on that site but i'm willing to hear any other suggestions from you.I'd be really glad to get any kind of help from you guys .I contacted guitarcenter about that sign "This product is either sold out or not available." and they told me that i just need to conact them again if i want to know if this item is available. Cheers from Poland !

Edit: ok, i found that i asked you do browse about 8 pages of gear on this site, whichc is not good so i got a list of stuff that i found interesting :

Greetings and welcome to the site. Your English is far better than most of us can read and write Polish so no apologies necessary!

When you say "jazz" that can cover a lot of ground. Is that small combo traditional jazz, big band, piano duet, fusion, funk....?

I think you will find that you would be very happy with a Ludwig, Slingerland, Rogers, Gretsch, Leedy or Camco kit. Based on your location you might have better luck finding a Premier, Beverly, Hayman or Sonor kit. I am assuming a 50's through early 70's kit here by the way. All of these manufacturers produced great drums. I would assume you would want to look for a 20" or 22" kick, a 12" rack tom and a 14" or 16" floor tom. That would be a versatile kit for recording. I think your definition of "jazz" might determine whether or not to go with a 20 or 22" kick drum. The more articulate and delicate styles might dictate a 20". Blues music could be well served on a 20" - 24" kick, especially in a studio. Larger kick drums can be a little more tiring to play so if drums are not your first instrument I would stay smaller.

The biggest thing to consider is if the kit has all it's parts (or can you source the missing ones), are the shells in-round and are the bearing edges in good shape. After that is up to you to decide the importance of cosmetic appearance.

There have been tons of discussions on this forum about which drums were best, which sounded better, or which exhibited the highest build quality. Most of that information is extremely subjective and, honestly, a well maintained drum with a good set of heads selected for their intended purpose, tuned for their intended purpose will sound excellent. You will love them.

There was not so long ago here nice ludwig holywood red sparkled for sale

It had additional holes drilled for consolette.

If you are not devoted collector, such a modification seriously knocks down the price. Sound remains the same.

Good Luck!

+1 on this advice! Also for recording it is good to take into consideration the versatility of sound and tuning ability of a drum kit if you don't own more than 1 drum kit. Something that will sing right on ballads but growl on harder music. Again very subjective....Good luck on your quest!

I just acquired a 60's Rogers and played it live in 2 very different contexts this week and I'm very happy with the results.

Also I'd be curious to see any pics of vintage drums from Poland! There are pictures of a vintage Belgian kit on here that fascinate me beyond belief!

Good luck finding your baby!

1964 Ludwig Champagne Super Classic
1970 Ludwig Blue Oyster Super Classic
