Here's a photo of a 20s LeedyLudwig chinese tom.

What is the history of these drums? Were they a primary drum on kits in the 20s-40s??

They look so rad.

they were indeed seen on a lot of the kits from the 20's. i think the more conventional toms,but with tacked on heads, replaced them in the 30's.

All those tom toms were produced in the far east and branded for any drum company. I suspect W & A had a hand in their worldwide distribution. They slowly faded out as drum companies started to make tunable toms. They came in 3 sizes, 10, 12 and 15 inches.

The early jazz guys used to take an ice-pick to the sides and 'tune' them that way. There's an old pic of either Zutty Singleton or Baby Dodds where you can clearly see the hacked sides.
