China cymbal suggestions?

Loading...

I have just started playing with some traditional jazz people (Dixieland) and feel a china cymbal would add some flavor to the music. I have never owned a china and would appreciate suggestions as to which brand, size, model, etc. to buy. I don't want anything cheap, particularly, and am willing to spend up to $300. I want a cymbal that can be used for occasional ride, but with a trashy sound for effect.

I tried a Zildjian at Guitar Center about six months ago. The sound was right, but I have no idea what model it was. It retailed IIRC for around $180. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would recommend trying a Paiste 2002 Novo China. Softer feel, rideable but still a china effect.

Wuhans have the authentic Chinese sound...they're made in China! They're really cheap, too.

i use a Stagg 20" china and it is a beauty soundwise and to look at. i guess it's equivalent to the Wuhan Rick mentioned. i do ride mine on occasion to add some pepper to the gravy. Stagg's and Wuhan's are $-wise close to nothing.

check also the Paiste's Swish'es. i've heared some good feedback on them too.

Now you have this terriffic list of items. The problem is once you say China, you end up with a long list of possiblities with different characteristics. It helps to know what you are after. For instance what recording do you have in your head? When I think of a swish to ride on, I think of something that can go from a whisper to a roar. Billy Cobham used to use these big old 22" Zildjian Swish and Pang cymbals. Listen to Inner Mounting Flame and you'll know right away what I'm talking about. They are tough to come by, but I've seen 1 or 2 on eBay. I've got an 18" A Zildjian Swish that comes pretty close and it's pretty new and I think I paid less than $300 for it.
