Check out this Star wild wrap kit!

Never seen this wrap before............do these say "Flower Power" or what? I saw these on ebay. I can't decide if this wrap reminds me of a really ugly shirt that you would find in some Olan Mills picture, or if it reminds me of an old wallpaper or curtains like you would find in your church basement while cleaning up after the Sunday School picnic. I'll say both!

Currently less than $500-missing front bass drum hoop-where are you ever gonna find a match for that?

This canNOT be an original wrap. It must have been a later added foil (but perhaps done almost/ nearly 100 % perfectly).

At all times, drum finishes had to please a major group of drummer (intention: selling these drums) and I have my greatest doubts that this exclusive wrap was dedicated (by STAR) for the Flower-Power-Generation: no way. Sumo Dude

I have a Star floor tom to which I have added a foil (onto the old wrap) and I've done it with carefully putting off and on again the grommet and the badge: you can't tell it, 'cause you don't see the difference ...

I guess, that if someone would lift this miraculous wrap under a lug just a little bit, you will see that the original wrap is still under it.

Imagine if this was a factory job-a REAL one-off for a trade show in 66/67 era.It would be rarer that Top Hat/Cane!One of ONE!But then look at the spurs. There is just NO excuse for that.Even I, Mr."make it work"couldn't do that.Real classic Star era, with gray interiors just prior to teardrop lugs.Did I see a video of Donovan's drummer playing these on Ed Sullivan doing "Sunshine Superman"?

Looks too good to be a re-wrap. Look at the perfectness of the badges....if it is a re-wrap, it's spot on.

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

My vote is that it is a re-wrap. It is certainly possible to do a very good job of re-wrapping a drum if one takes care and has patience. So just 'cause it looks good doesn't mean it's factory...

Also, isn't that tom mount only seen on Pearl made kits? Although the mounting plates on the toms look like Star pieces, the single pole style of mounting the toms on the kick is Pearl, I thought. Again, doesn't mean the rest of it isn't Star, but would certainly put the kick shell into question.

Hey Guys (and Gals?) -

Ya know - if you think about it....is there any way that we will ever really know conclusively if this is a re-wrap or not (short of some confession)? I don't think we are going to be able to find some person who worked in the Star factory some 40-50 years ago who would know this.....and if I recall correctly, modern Pearl and Tama are pretty clueless to this stuff compared to the knowledge on this site. (but of course - maybe there are some employees of Tama or Pearl on here??)

Seems to me that the tom mounting is avery similar to some vintage Pearl stencil stuff, the set screw is not located in the same position, thus perhaps possible that it is all genuine Star. jonnistix or Mickey will eventually chime in and they surely can answer this particular part of the mystery.

As for the wrap - very cool it is real original Star, but only because of its rarity, as I am with Jeff, just not doing it for me. Still a fun mystery to discuss though!

I wonder if anyone on this forum will snag these up so as to be able to answer some of the more intimate questions we have about it.

John

@skink: no, sorry, but that's not correct: quite in opposite, this type of the double tom holder was solely produced by STAR: it's the first (of two) versions of the so called 'Free-o-matic' tom holder (a copy of Rogers' Swivomatic DTH, but better in terms of robustness than the original).

And teverson-sr's note concerning the bass drum spurs is also a reference that somehow the set has definitely been modified.
