Well, I just got loaned a Blue "Snowball" mic that has a USB cord that plugs right into my Mac computer/Garage Band. I tested it out in my practice room the other day and it really did a great job with the drums/cymbals -especially compared to the old Sure SM57. Usually, it's ALL cymbals, but this Blue mic has a three position switch that I think changes the pattern from omni to directional to cardioid. I'm not sure which is which! heh heh And I think it's relatively inexpensive....but I'm not certain.
The cheapest one that I would actually consider using would be the AKG C1000. Those MXL mics are crap.
what is cheap?
Is that an oxymoron? (Just kidding.) Looking forward to the recommendations.

I was always totold to use "inexpensive" when refering to low-cost and "cheap" when low quality AND low-cost. ;)
If I were to use a single mic for the whole kit (including cymbals) I would place an overhead SM81. It may not be the most inexpensive, but it will be thwe best value.

I am going to second these mics. My band used them for overheads and also for acoustic guitar and they sound very good for the money! Look around online for the cheapest and then get GC to price match or something. That's what I did.
