Here on the beloved VDF website there is a Pearl Drums catalog listed as 1970. Everything about this catalog looks much later than 1970 to me. I would place it at mid 70s . I can't see a date in the print shown. It advertises wood fiberglass shells - that didn't happen until post 1977 to my knowledge. Opinions?http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/pearl_drumsets_1970.htm

I think you're right that there's no way that's 1970. The 1972 catalog shows fiberglass shells here: http://vintagedrumguide.com/my_collection_pearl_catalog.html. And it looks it that really is from 1972 because the price list at the end is dated.
Also, looking closer at that catalog, I'm guessing that my floor tom is from the Deluxe series and the bass and mounted tom are from the Professional series.
The catalog you're looking at is definitely a couple years later, at least. But what's identified as the 1973 catalog has wood-fiberglass shells too. http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/pearl_drumsets_1973.htm. And I KNOW this is really from 1973 because I have one in hard copy right in front of me and it's copyrighted 1973!

It could be that the brochure was marginally ahead of production.. We were importing & selling the Dyna Family & the Powermate kits to OZ in 74-75. As Oz was (and still is) at the bottom of the food chain they would have been earlier released to Europe & USA... (I owned & was playing a wood-fibreglass Powermate kit in 74) ..

Thanks for your input- I'll dig up some Japanese 1970 catalogs and post up=== I hear you're saying about wood fiberglass in 74 - that's early but totally possible. Pearl GAX Maple Fiberglass drums didn't come out until 78 but Wood Fiberglass was earlier..... thinking (smell of something burningCoffee Break2)
Thanks

BUT... the Pearl logos on the front BD heads on the cover (the double bass "Dyna Family" set) are definately late 60s logos. Also available in this catalog are the "phenolic" shells, which were introduced in 1969 as "unique plastic fibre" shells. Those didn't last long as to availability on sets, but were in the mid-to-late 70s used again with Pearl's concert toms.
So... IMO 1970 (or possibly 1971) would be correct as to the date of this catalog...

There were many Pearl catalouges printed for/and by local distributors during the 70's. Although I was working for the OZ Pearl importer at that time , some of those catalouges from that period I am just seeing for the first time now..
Here is a link to another on Ebay.. I had not seen this one before either, though it does seem to confirm that the Catalouge in question is probably as stated.. 1970.

Big, true, friendly respect to you but I have to disagree-
Those lugs, the pipes, the bass drum spurs, even the colours offered all date it later than 1970. The phenolic shells were offered as late as 1975.
Here are shots from the 1969 catalog- it's way too big a jump to mark this as 1970

LongJohn -- I have that particular catalog. I bought one of those on the secondary market a few years back, however when I bought my new Pearl W/FG drums in 1978 I at that time got a copy of that catalog as well from the music store in Hays, Ks. The biggest difference in was the hardware. In Pearl's previous catalog which is generally dated at 1975, the drums and sets available were virtually the same as in this catalog... but the hardware is different. In this catalog the 7/8" tube hardware took over, as well as the round knob on the BD spurs was replaced with a "T" handle. These changes are reflected in this catalog.
Osakabop -- I understand your point on the hardware changes from the late 60s to the 70s. But I just can't get past that BD logo. That was only used by Pearl (that I remember) in the late 60s and the very early 70s when they switched to the one you still see on pretty much everything even today.

Sorry... off the track a bit... Not suggesting that the Ebay catalouge proved anything other than it being yet another that I had not previously seen...
