Can you really walk into Guitar Center and buy a 1963 Ludwig Super Classic for $99.99

Loading...

Yes you can.....

This is one of those deals you hear about but never happens to you. Well, I guess it was my turn.

13/16/22 Super Classic. Date stamped 1963. Pre-serial number keystone badges.

Beautiful silver sparkle. There's no evidence of fade. The color under the hoops is exactly like the rest of the wrap. I'll see the real truth when I start removing the lugs to clean. It's totally tight at all seams.

White resicote interiors.

Red baseball bat mufflers.

Everything is nickel over brass except the snare (Oh, didn't I mention that it came with the original matching chrome over brass Supraphonic snare for $99.99? LOL). Actually, I think they still called it a Super Ludwig snare in 63. Unless this is a first year issue Supraphonic. I still need to do a little research.

There's hardly a scratch anywhere from my initial inspection. The legs on the bass drum and the legs on the floor tom look like they have only been tightened down on a few times.

My guess is that they were played a few times and then stored in the hard cases until now. What? I didn't mention that the set came with a full set of hard cases, too? LOL

A pretty darn good deal for $99.99.

So, now comes the task of removing all the hardware and detailing. This nickel is really hard to shine. Flitz and a lot of elbow grease is the only thing I have found so far that works.

I'll post some "before" pictures as soon as I get some. I was so excited I just had to post. LOL

On a different topic and not related other than to speak of my excitement. I have my new 2010 Tama Starclassic Bubinga Birch set arriving tomorrow. I am a happy drummer this week. :) This will be the first drums I have played that are not from the 60's (or 70's). It should prove to be an interesting comparison.

WOW!!!

Thats better then i did...once in Columbus Ohio,on warped tour '04 i scored a 4-digit 20,12,14 blue oyster clubdate Ludwig w/little to no fade for under $100 a drum!!! complete no mods and sold that to my friends at the pro drum shop of hollywood for a quick double up...which they turned so fast, that even today its still the fastest selling drumset of the pro drum shop history...YES...it was that clean!!! so i know deals are still out there and most of us will not venture into a GC cuz of reasons i will not get into,However, its worth it to scope out the drum section just cuz you never know!!!

good deal man...enjoy...Excited

I don't think so. That's the nice thing about GC. They simply want to double their money. And, they did. They gave $50 on a trade in for a pedal for it. GC is very happy with the deal. This is why I love big box stores. they have rules. And, they live by them. If you know the rules and are flexible, you can get great deals. This isn't my first good deal from a big box music store. I get great cymbal stands for $5 to $10 pretty often.

Here are a couple pics. I'm starting with the snare.

Was the Supraphonic introduced in 63 or 64? In the 62 catalog, the metal snare is still called the Super Ludwig. In the 64 catalog, they are calling it the Supraphonic. I didn't see a 63 catalog so I don't know if it was introduced that year or not.

It appears to be seamless (if I know what I'm looking for) so that would indicate the Supraphonic? I don't think the Super Ludwig was seamless, was it?

Look at that muffler on the snare. Does it look brand new or what? Although, I am finding a few flaws here and there upon closer inspection. Still, overall, very nice.

Okay..... maybe some dumb ass GC manager should brag over the fact that he doubled their money, but lost $500 to $900 in the process?

If I were him, I wouldn't be holding my breath waiting over a raise for a job well done.

Well, well, well. Perhaps she's not so much a virgin as originally anticipated. LMAO I opened the kick drum and found the hoop inlay to be loose and missing about 1/2" at the end. In fact, I think it might be a replacement. It simply looks too new and unfaded to be this old. I had doubts about all the wrap but it's joined with the wood at the seam so it's clearly original wrap.

However, the real kicker is the light setup I found inside the drum. LMAO See the pics.

It looks like there's no screw holes for the lights. Everything is glued or attached to the lug screws.

However, it looks like the inside has been sanded smooth.

More research is in order. LOL

Call me a skeptic, but there is something not quite right with this.........If you go on GC's website, they do have a lot of vintage gear in their stores across the country and they are priced accordingly (meaning they know what they are selling before prices are set). This just sounds way to good to be actually true....someone is pulling our leg here. $500 I could maybe buy that, but $100?? Post a picture of the GC receipt and then I'll admit that it is true and a great deal.

Hmmmm
