Can anyone tell me what this wrap is?

Loading...

This is from a 1968 Ludwig kit. When I got it I was told it was a Ringo Starr kit, but I have been studying it and it is not dark enough to be the black diamond pearl. It looks like skyblue pearl, except it isn't blue at all. I need help on this, Thanks,

Poppy

Hi Poppy,

Nice looking tom! shine 'er up nice and you'll have a beauty there...

What you're looking at is "faded sky blue pearl". 40 years and maybe some cigarette smoke from bars or wherever does a number on the blue pigment that was once there. The reference to the "Ringo " kit is simply in brand of drum. Ringo played a Ludwig "Black Oyster Pearl" which is a striated finish.

I have a date stamped '63 Ludwig Jazzfest (snare that often accompanied the set your tom comes from) (pic) that was sky blue pearl and has faded to the same color you have there. No harm in that, just adds to the vintage appeal, character and history of the drum. I have a 13" Ludwig Black Diamond Pearl tom from the same era and it remains black! See the pic with the two wraps stacked together for comparison. Mallet Player2

That has been my conclusion so far. I have been on a mission to figure this out. My Ludwigs do not look blue at all though. I have found a few places to get this wrap. I plan on buying a 60's snare shell and wraping it to match my 68 Ludwigs. I am also thinking about wraping my roger's 20" floor tom to match this kit. Thanks!

Whatever you don't re-wrap that blue tom. It will lose it's value big time. What is the condition of the wrap on the rest of your kit? Unless it is really damaged with big splits and gashes keep it all vintage. A good car wax on old wrap does wonders to re-vitalize it. The chrome, cleaned and shined properly will do a lot to enhance the look of damaged wrap.

Do you have a pic of the Rogers tom?? Love to see it..

Just a word of caution.

LOL I wouldnt touch the wrap on these drums. They look fabulous. it is a hollywood kit with a generic snare. I good friend of mine died a few yrs back and I bought these from his son for $600. My old friend Cliff used to say these were originnaly Ringo's drums. He was just kidding of course. I am watching a few 60's Ludwig snare shells on ebay. There is actually a 60's skyblue pearl snare on there too. I just found a floor tom to match my 60's sonors on craigslist. I persuaded the guy to list iton ebay and I got it. it is on its way to me. i am very anxious to get that. i have been looking for yrs for that. Here's a pic of the rogers floor tom next to my 20" sonor bass drum.

Thanks again!

Poppy

The quest for Sonors is a tough one! did it come form Canada? I think I saw it on Craigslist too.

Looks like Blue Agate wrap there on the bass. That's a huge floor tom! Actually selling the SBP Jazzfest if you're interested?

Sure I'm interested. How much do you want for it?

Remember there's no bailout money for poor drummers! lol

Pull off a lug and compare the color under it with the exposed wrap. The color difference should show what fading has taken place.

That floor tom looks like a Slingerland with added Rogers legs. (Or someone changed all the lugs and maybe the top Rim...) Doesn't look like a Rogers...

Show a pic of the interior.
