Camco Oaklawn

Hi VDF friends,

Allow me to share some pictures of my latest project. Thanks to a forum member, I was able to buy this mid/late sixties 22,16,13,12 Oaklawn set. It took me a while to find the missing parts and get the restoration going. A couple of extra holes had to be plugged and especially the bass drum top section needed a lot of work as it was drilled (molested) for a 70's Premier tom mount system. I decided to go for the typical Camco wood finish instead of the more obvious wrap solution. See it as a tribute to the work of the great Jim Gordon and his iconic Walnut Camco kit. (same finish, same sizes, same shells) The steel hoops are not original and tone-controls are missing. The positive is that the edges are perfect and sound-wise, it's everything you would expect from a 6-ply Jasper Camco kit. I attached some before and after shots. I hope you like the result.

Regards Stef

Hi Stef!

Another beautifully restored kit! You did a fantastic job on patching the bass drum mount hole! Thanks for sharing your work. Gorgeous Camco kit!

This is as good as it gets. Amazing stunners there!

I have a drab grey moire wrap tuxedo kit that I'm tempted to do what you did to...

p.s. Camco's were never date stamped inside, correct?

Thanks for the nice comments,...

Camco Drums were never date stamped. Also the catalogs don't make us any wiser as they were often outdated and had the same pictures in them for a decade. External characteristics (finishes, hardware, hoops, badges, wood-plies, etc...), can give us an estimated year of manufacturing.

Only during the later Los Angeles period (1973-1977), Camco stamped or wrote numbers inside the shells. Research thought us that those numbers are ascending and chronological. Early sets have two digit stamps. The later drums have 4-digit stamps. The oldest number found is #10, the latest one is #1473.

About 18 months ago I posted a thread about it and asked members to help building the data base. Unfortunately the response was very low.

Thank you for this. Perhaps we can ask sellers (Ebay, etc) of LA kits if they can provide that information.

I've been building a data base since 18 months.

I contacted people via the forums, Ebay, Facebook groups, email, etc...

I collected info on 60 drum sets so far.
