Camco Oaklawn restoration, before and after pictures. Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Loading...

I bought myself a Camco Oaklawn in 20,12,16 a while ago. It was wrapped in a blue satin finish, not like the original moire, much uglier. I've always been a fan of wood finishes so i decided to bring out the maple on these drums.

Just wanted to share som pictures from the restoration process and the final result:

First layer

Then come the walnut. After that, 1 layer of oil, two times a day, everyday for 18 days!

Voila!

All hardware was polished. I switched out the original bass drum hoop clams to new ones because the old were really rusty and impossible to get in good shape.

Best kit i've owned!

Beautiful job. Great drums. So the satin flame you took off was not original?

Thanks!

Nope, the wrap was some cheap satin copy. Nothing like the original...

hippie - Beautiful set of drums, nice job on those. Welcome to VDF and to the Camco club. Some die-hard Camco lovers here, you're in good company.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

I believe your set was most likely a natural finish originally and was subsequently wrapped. The standard technique was to use clear interiors on naturally finished drums and white interiors on wrapped drums. Yours seem to have had natural finish inside, so that is my guess.

My set is the same with a later moire or satin, but the insides are clear. If you look at the tom in the second photo, you'll see that.

I'm thinking of doing something similar to what you have done, at some juncture, though I have been a bit tempted to use merlot sparkle because I had a burgandy sparkle set back in the early 90's.

Nothing special here but I like them.

The original finish was most certainly wood. Otherwise you would not see the lug 'shadows' in your first picture. Great restoration.

I too, have a formerly natural Camco Oaklawn that has been rewrapped in green sparkle. I have been thinking about merlot sparkle too, as the green is getting beat up, but this finish puts a whole new light on things.
