Camco 3d Moire 5x14 Project Needs Your Input!!!

Loading...

Hey Drum people:

I Picked up this Drum this morning thanks to CL

Its an Oaklawn era 5x14 snare drum with an horrible spray paint job

The only missing parts are the badge, the key holder and 3 chuby washers

the rest is there and in excellent condition.

I lifted the seam very carefully to see whats the finish underneath because judging by the texture of the wrap it was either a swirl or 3D moire.

I was overwhelmed by the idea of being in front of my first real "Find"

and there it was...Excellent condition 3D moire wrap!!!!...

Now what do I do to take off the spray paint!!!????

I dont want to mess around with it so im looking for knowledgeable people who has done this before or has any input on how should I face this project.

I dont think that a Heat gun its going to work because I could crack the finish, Paint remover its out of the picture for being way too harsh, acetone and thinner wont work either ( I tried that on a painted over Sonor bass drum)...

The paint its Spray paint

What you guys think?

heres some shots

Kind regards

Thanks in advance!!!

I've heard tell of water based strippers that are relaticvely mild and can be removed in stages to minimize any possible damage to the underlying surface.

I've had good results with 3M safest stripper but haven't used it on a wrapped drum, only bare wood and metal shells. The longer you leave the stripping agent on, the deeper it penetrates. For a thin layer, you may not have to leave it on long at all. I used a flexible plastic putty knife to peel off the paint without scratching the shell underneath.

Whatever you use, start with a thin coat and only let it sit for a few minutes. If you need more power, add more stripper and let it sit longer. Who knows what would happen if the stripper penetrated the wrap? Maybe it would or maybe it wouldn't. I don't know.
