Cadillac Green-like 50's Gretsch Shellpack

SEE MY LAST POST - There's not much interest so I have decided to take them off the market for now - maybe I will put them up for sale again later....if the market improves. - thanks for looking

I have four orphan shells that I have recently had painted by a pro painter that I want to sell.

The paint is a Cadillac Green-like which I had matched close to an original Cadi Green drum that I own.

I want $2300 for the drums. I have a lot more than that into them - with the paint....hardware....heads and shells.

The snare and toms and bass drum of course have era correct hoops.

The 9x13 rack tom is date-stamped 1953.

The date-stamped 1951 bass drum came to me complete with original hardware and was 'naked' factory original. There was some damage to the inner ply that occurred when the drum was stripped of it's original warp (midnight pearl?) before I took possession.

The 16" date-stamped 1953 floor tom I altered and renovated from a tacked reso headed drum to make it a separate tuned (two lugged heads) drum. The floor, bass and rack toms all have their original badges. I bought an era-correct badge for the snare drum.

The snare drum came to me as a shell only with an amature tar-like finish wth no hardware or badge. It's a 6.5x14 date-stamped 1950 shell with NO extra holes....thank God.

Kona,

That is a beautiful shell pack restoration you have. I would suggest adding photos or a link to the original thread. Folks need to see how great these drums look. Good luck with your sale.

Here's a link to when I originally posted these drums. There is a better link somewhere but I could not find it so far. I edited my original post at this link....bolded/Italic print.

Bummer!

These shells have been in storage since I picked them up from the painter in July. We sold our house and moved to another city in July. I got them painted Cadi Green for the second time to match the new/old 9x13 53 Gretsch shell I picked up. I wanted to keep the original Cadillac Green tom seperate from this shellpack = a stand-alone piece of Gretsch drum history if you like.

The painter agreed to paint the drums at a reduced cost because he had already painted the other three drums once for me. See the photo of the kit in the link above. That was a very good job.

I just picked them up from storage a few days ago...and only last night had a good chance to go over the finish. I am not impressed. I don't know how my painter did it but he missed (underspayed) a few places on the bottom part of the bass drum shell....near the hoop so the hoop can cover part of it. But still.........I'm not happy. I know he will paint the drum over for me ...at no cost....but I would have to ship both ways.....about $100 I think.

I want the drums to look at least as good as they did in the link above. I will think about sending the drum away....if not, I will keep them the way they are. I know that folks here would not be satisfied with the paint the way it is. And ....to top it off.....the paint supplier did not have the origianl paint code....didn't save it....so this paint was 'eyeballed' by him for this second painting. I don't like it as much as the first batch. Of course, I don't have all the hardware on the drums at this time so it's hard to compare.

The best thing for me to do at this time is hold off on selling them until I figure this out.

Kona-

Disclose the "issues", perceived and otherwise, and keep them on the market! Only crooks and dreamers expect brand new looking forty+ year old drums, everytime.....LOL.

You only owe potential buyers the truth, let the next guy worry about the paint and other details. Sell them and enjoy the retirement years!

Just my thoughts........

Yes - thanks.

I have at least one person interested still. They are 60 year old shells and given the few paint flaws the paint job is still very nice.....a high quality automotive paint.

The first photo shows the paint fade on the left - the third photo has some paint missing at the extream outer edge but you'd never see it....the bass drum hoop covers it.....it's only about 1/8" from the bearing edge. Actually....my new Gretsch Custom USA drums (new in 2011) had the finish cut back about 3/8" from the bearing edges....that's the way Paul Cooper and company cut them in the factory.

Oh my gosh! That is terrible Kona!

Just kidding. Those shells look freakin' spectacular and I wish I was in the market as I would buy them right now. Sell with full disclosure (oh wait, you just did) and a clear conscience. Good luck sir.

They look great and I would not worry about those 'flaws' one little bit. Once those drums are assembled they will look fantastic...
