Building a Gong

Loading...

From O-Lugs

The least expensive way that I would advise would be to simply get a ready-made one in a "neutral" color -like black. You'll probably grow out of wanting a gong drum pretty soon, anyway. But what do I know? This is a vintage drum forum and I'm old. Falling Do

A used Gong Bass is almost impossible to find!!!! I saw one on the 'bay for $700!!!

Yeah- but O-lugs, you know a LOT about other stuff.

Gong Bass drums are just super-expensive any way you go about it. They just might be cheaper if you build it yourself.

I don't have enough room even in my drum room, let alone ANY stage I play on to CONSIDER a gong drum in my arsenel.

Pearl does one with the same size shells and heads (i.e. 24" on 24"), and a metal, bass drum-sized hoop. Check out Tommy Lee's new acrylic kit- that's how his Gong Bass is set up. Yes, it's triggered, but I am certain they ripped off Tama's Gong Bass just like they ripped off Tama's Octobans (Quarter Toms). I have a feeling that the acoustic sound is still okay for Tommy's kit despite it being triggered. I guess what I am saying is that you could do a simpler version of the Gong Bass if you don't have the Gong Bass lugs. Just get yourself a cheap kick drum and experiment with this. Get a set of floor tom lugs and you'll be set. Finding real Gong Bass lugs is harder than finding Hen's Teeth. I suppose you could use some sort of spacers for the larger head/smaller shell. Again- can't wait to see what you come up with!!!!Hair metal drummer who never outgrew hair metal...

That idea about using a Kick drum is exactly what I did with the 22" dx. I used the leg bracket and some small generic post in the slots to hold it! No modifacation the the bass drum at all!! It is not coventional but work for me know ing it will never leave the room to gig it out. The only place that it would go is out on the back deck where every couple of years I shoot picti=ures of the changes

My room is a hot upstairs room in a Cape cod House in Chicagoland!! the floor is a 12' x 12' room but have the roof line that interfers with a lot of things, it is very tight all around and just have enough room to get behind it, I kind of have to do Duck and jive to get there but very open once there.

Search ebay for Gong Bass Drum- there's a cat who has a small one that with some TLC, could probably work and is a bit smaller. It is complete (sans head). It will probably go for nothing.

I am doing a 22x20" Pearl style Gong bass (i.e. same size head as shell). I don't have a clue as to what head to use. 2 ply oil filled (Pinstripe or Evans Hydraulic)? One ply? Vented?

I want that deep, deep thud!!!!! But I don't want it quite to sound like a bass drum. It has been many, many years and quite a few brain cells since I played a damned gong bass!!!! I want one once again!!!!

Ok as we all know things can change!! Some times we find what we were not even looking for!! I did check out that 20x8 on the Bay!! Was watching it and hoping for a different way to work it in, found on answer of where to put it. then I went a little further in looking for other things and filled a different Dream!! I have been looking for a 24" tama Swingstar or Rockstar Dx to put in the My Dream Set or Never Ending Project!! Any how I found one in calfornia that is at an orphan drum place and they have a White one for $250, so that was great but eventually I would have to rewrap it!! but while in Ebay Land I found a 24" Swingstar Deep Bass Drum in black!! I bought it and that part of the puzzle is filled!! But Now I am going to build for the future what I just lost on Ebay except build two instaed of only one!!
