So many variables when doing it right.

I use a Harbor Freight polisher. 2 wheels, 1 on each end.

First, I use the semi rigid wheel (sewn cotton with stitches)

for a cleaning.

Then finish polish with the soft flapper.

I use the harbor freight duel wheel buffer. I like to use the medium cotton wheels and I usually double them up to make them thicker. Start with the black or green compound for REALLY bad scratches but the red or white compound should be fine for lighter stuff.

I would also recommend soaking the hardware in vinager for a couple of hours first.(I'm a custom knife maker so I do a lot of buffing and polishing)

It was the best value in a tool I wasn't sure I wanted to spend that much money on. Harbor Freight rules for things like that.
