Buddy Rich / Matched grip - No, But Yes.

Loading...

I was watching this clip of Buddy doing an entire solo using match grip. The next clip in the queue on the right side of the YT page [in my case anyway] was titled, "Buddy Rich on why he doesn't use match grip".

I thought that was kinda funny...anyway the match grip solo was pretty awesome.

When he switched over to matched grip, he was using the butt ends of the sticks, probably to give the solo a more "tribal" feel, for lack of a better word....more attack on the toms (on that song, anyway.)That of course was not his usual m.o., but it works for him when he needs it. He's Buddy Rich. Also check out "Hawaiian War Chant" with Tommy Dorsey's band. Same kind of thing.

Totally. It was just kinda funny watching the clip and glancing at the title of the next clip. :)

I really only ever play at jazz myself, but even then trad grip just feels right.

I play traditional and have (rarely) run into the occasion where things got "hot" enough that I need to "cave man" my left hand in the same manner so the 2 & 4 could be heard over the noise...

But honestly, if you have a good stroke, you can be just as powerful with the left hand as a match grip player.

The only other time I played match grip was a European tour of Europe with a marching band. Although the democratic vote was for traditional (more of us on the line), the director had us play match. That sort of sucked getting stick height etc. perfect but after a week of 12-hour practice it sinks in.
