Buddy Rich Cymbal

mcdrummer!...

I answered your question in post #2 of this currently two page thread! Do you guys even READ the posts?! LOL!!!! That wasn't meant as a personal affront by the way, I was just askin'! That said...

Yes... Buddy's Swish was a 22" "A" Zildjian w/rivets, and yes the Swish "knocker" that you have located will give you the sound you're after! As a sidebar:

I wasn't one of the guys that met BR on his bus... no ... mine was quite a bit more personal. I met with him in his dressing room and it was just Buddy, myself, and his long time friend/manager, Stanley Kay. By the way, Stanley Kay just passed away, couple weeks ago. Now THERE was the guy that could fill in the blanks on the great, witty, slightly acerbic, but most talented, Buddy Rich. Anyway... I also want to mention that outside of being a fan/freak of BR's for 43 years, I also knew and studied arranging with TWO of his primary trumpet players from his KILLER early 70's band: Jeff Stout... and Greg Hopkins. Cool thing about that was in addition to being GREAT GUYS!, this was also when I had my "one on one" with Buddy as that happened in late 1973... I remember it like it was yesterday. Anyway!... after arranging class.. ( and actually DURING class too! LOL! ) .. I would pepper those two guys with questions about Buddy... the band... what was he REALLY like... etc. It was freaking fabulous. I will say that they were both extremely gracious towards Buddy for the opportunity to work with him, and for what he taught them about "the music business". Course they both let slip with a "little" of the other stuff too! LOL!! There's more... but I'll save it as otherwise this post would be completely hi-jacked and even more lengthy! I will say this though:

I doubt that your friend who was on the band will really have any knowledge as to the "what was what" with Buddy's drums/cymbals. It's possible of course, but what I have found from talking with a lot of guys that worked for and with Buddy over the years, is that they really paid little to no attention to his actual equipment... they were much more concerned with his actual MOOD! LOL!! Go buy that Swish!!!!!!!

yeah!

Tommyp,

actually I realized that you gave the size after I hit "submit reply"

And thanks for your insights into the real BR. I began drumming in the '60s and Ringo was my first influence, until my uncle gave me the Rich vs. Roach album (vinyl of course) and it all changed for me. I saw buddy once in the late '70s at a high school in my town and I was awed. p.s. I did notice he had black tape on the bottom of one of his cymbals, ride I think.

Thanks again, I'm going to get that swish.

I was in Muscara Music in Belleville, New Jersey one Saturday afternoon-I was there most Saturday afternoons for years-and noticed a lot of used gear in a pile; cymbals, hardware, drum cases. I asked the sales guy about it, and he told me that one of Buddy's ex-roadies brought it all in to sell on consignment. He acquired it after Buddy stiffed him for back pay. Instead of giving him money, Buddy gave him a bunch of used gear that he could sell. The cases had Buddy's name stenciled on them. I should have bought something out of that pile, but money was tight, and the store wanted a premium price for everything, as one might expect.

I met Cathy Rich at NAMM in 2008. She had a booth and was marketing (or trying to market) those lousy Chinese BR drumsets at that point, the ones nobody wanted that were discontinued quickly. She was nice enough, but you could tell she was trying to live off her father's name.
