Brass or Gold rims

Loading...

Question for anyone who is reading. When you get the brass or gold rims, how is that actually applied to the rims? Is there a type of spray enamal or something that they use?

Just curious, if anyone knows please let me know. And if this is common knowledge, please be kind!

Thanks,

Kevin

I bought a pair of brass plated rims for my Blackrolite Beauty project snare Click here to see it.

According to the seller's website, they are "brass plated over standard zinc hoop - not SOLID brass." - If you're talking vintage rims/hoops, then it depends on the maker I imagine.

I don't think anyone lacquers/paints them as the coating would chip off pretty quickly.

Again, we're talking new here, not vintage, but I doubt that any of the good drum builders of yesteryear would paint or lacquer their *metal* rims/hoops.

Lucky is correct they would be electroplated. Then polished and often clear coated with lacquer to keep them shinning.

Makers used many different materials to make hoops (steel, brass, nickel, etc.) and different materials to plate them. Usually chrome, brass and nickel are used for plating. Gold is used for special items.

And don't forget powder coating (for cool colors like black, blue, red, etc...). It's becoming more popular on drum hardware as well as hoops.
