Bought some Slingerlands from CL

Loading...

Hey all

Just bought a set of Slingerlands from Craigslist. The Kick (16X26) and the

Floor Tom (20X18 - 4 legs) have Niles badges.

The toms do not have badges. The inside of the 12" tom has NOV 1965

stamped on the inside.

The 13" shell is different than the rest. I've attached a photo of the kit

and the inside of the 13" shell.

Anyone have an idea what I have? I originally was just going to keep the kick and

sell the floor and rack toms but now am debating recovering them all. Just not sure how practical it will be to use and haul around a 20" floor.

That 13 is a much older shell, it's got the humongous re-rings from the Radio King days...definitely pre-Chicago black/gold badge, maybe even as old as the late 40's.

Can you track down the name and address of the guy who slapped on those Ludwig mounts ? ...so I can hunt him down and install one upside his head ? Mister T

Nice find....those are the heavier 6-plys with the lacquered interiors. Those drums have a lotta sound (but of course...what rig with a 26" bass and a 20" FT wouldn't ? !)

I dunno, I mean...the kick and FT are probably part of the same original kit...it'd be nice to keep 'em together. Of course, in such an instance the FT could fetch a good $250-300 on eBay all by itself; I mean, just the leg mounts are worth $120 for all 4 of 'em.... so...that is certainly something to keep in mind. I understand, the practicality of a 20" FT is somewhat...specious.

Its too bad somebody butchered them by adding the Ludwig Modular mounts to them. I'm a ludwig guy for sure, but even I think those were overkill in their day! Very tough to hide those holes if you want to restore them to original specs now.....

Just noticed that there's some serious bizarreness goin' on with those wraps too...look at how much reveal there is off of the bass drum edge. That wasn't a Slingerland spec...I wonder if they have been rewrapped or if someone cut back the original wraps from the edges (?)

I'm positive they were rewrapped at one point since the drums come from

different eras.

The 13" tom is possibly from the 1940's, the 12" is stamped on the inside

as NOV 1965, and the kick and FT are from the early 70's.

Also along the way someone put some Ludwig modular mounts on the toms

and the kick.

If you choose, you could rewrap. They should sound very nice, though. Those modular mounts are very strong and should keep your drums from moving...or blinking. Looks...I like 'em...some don't. That should be an interesting kit when you get it up and running. I wouldn't mind following the progression. Start a new thread for the restoration, if you want.

A thought:

Have you considered using the bass and floor and picking up a 14x10 off ebay (they are everywhere now) and using that as a serious rock kit? The 12 and 13 would either be the wonderful start of a new kit or sell 'em and use that money for the wrap (if you choose) and the new tom. Or...you could turn that 20 floor into a bass for use with that 12 and 13. Then you could pick up a 16 floor and sell the 26 bass. Oh man...There are always options. That's the beauty of our chosen instrument. Can't do that with a guitar!

If that's the case then the whole lot are candidates for re-wrapping...
