From atomicmorganic

That is probably a 70 kit. They only made the rosewood teardrops for a couple of years. 6 ply beech. I have a 13,16,20 rosewood teardrop kit as well. Love 'em. Very beautiful drums, and sound good too. Hard to beat Sonor quality.

I stayed away from say`n 70`s because the last badge was back to two piece and I see no evidence of removal. (69 to 71)

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

The snare from the photos is at my rehearsal space. It rocks! I paid separate for it. The kit w/o snare was $500. Awesome to find out that it's 60's. Makes it cooler that way! I always thought beech wood was crap and would just go for old maple sets. Is 100% beech wood really a sawed after wood? Surprising to me! They sound great so that's what matters. Just surprised anyone would prefer these beech wood sets over say a Rogers maple set from the same era. So this "rosewood" finish appears original?! That is great too.

SONOR didn`t count the wrap as a ply, they did with the veneers. So you have 5 ply beech and 1ply Rosewood. The beechwood was layered with heartwood and sapwood and thickness varied. If the plies are layered the same and thickness the same, chances are the kit was ordered that way with double kick.

Yes you did very good on that score. Sonor is known for there high quality beech shells. They used the beech exclusively till the 80's when they introduced the sonorlite birch shell.

You have around 1970-73 teardrops 6ply rounded edges(most likely) with an outer veneer of beautiful rosewood. I personally own only the 80's rosewood (13 different drums) and these early 70's are just much more rich in color and grain patterns. Brazilian rosewood too.

BTW I have some teardrops too but not in that finish, mine are wrapped and I just love playing them, it was my main gigging kit when I was with my last band, always got compliments on them because you just don't see them out in the wild like you do Ludwig or Rogers.

Congratulations on your find, Gary.

Sonor teardrops:

I have 4 drum sets already. This set is truly pristine.

Dimensions are 12/13/18/22/22

Anyone want to buy it?

I won't treasure it as much as you all. I am very partial to my 69 ludwig set

Call 510/303/4419 if anyone wants to buy it. I'm considering fair offers. Could ebay them as we'll probably

Thanks!

Ian
