Bollero Drums?

Loading...

Dear Members,

My daughter's "friend" recently purchased a five piece set of Bollero Drums for $140.00. I promised that I would look into the origin of these drums. Opinion seems to be varied on The Forum. Star? Pearl? Some kind of an independent make? I have not had the time to even look at the set. If I could examine them, I might be able to hazard a guess by the configuration of the lugs etc. It may be quite some time however since I will be actually there to take a look. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hey Brian, Bollero is a Star line, not a stencil brand. It is a line of Star drums that are named Bollero and distributed by Star as one of their lines, like Drum Mate. Member "Lissy" has a set and they are here close at hand. Look up his posts and see the attachments from Ralf of the catalogs in which they reside. They are 6/9 ply kits from post 67 best I can tell. What is the wrap color? Lissy's was the white/black pearl swirl. Cool looking and according to him, great sounding drums.

Thank you very much, jonnistix! As always, you come through! I'll pass on the information as soon as possible. I don't even know what kind of wrap they have. As of now, I've never even seen the drums. The badges are correct and the five pieces are in good shape according to their new owner. I hope to see this set soon. Hmm.....I wonder.....Naw. I'm happy with my Supremes.

Thanks again! You're the best!

After being a VDF reader for some time now, I finally decided to put some pics and experiences up before the set will be sold to create some space again.

We are dealing with another Bollero (STAR brand) set (12,13,16,14,22).

I guess early 70s, could someone confirm this.

Original colour looks grayish, not sure about the exact terminology.

Interior paint and great sound and volume (ask my neighbours ;-) ).

Two downsides:

-internal dampers for 12 and 13 tom are too far in. Dampening your toms make them sound terribly ugly.

-I exceeded my drum quota and fell in love with another snare, so these have to go. (Up on Dutch local craiglist right now, but any international sales can be discussed).

Enjoy the pics. Will feed you with some more when my Swingstar kit is finished. Grtz Wouter

Hello Wouter,

Yes, that's a STAR as well. The finish is called 'Gray Diamond Pearl'.

Produced in the very early 70s (or late 60s).

One small issue: the left tom bracket has a new drilled hole (directly besides the genuine one): if your bracket is produced in the same way like mine, that may cause problems after some time, as the brackets weren't made in solid cast completely.

At that point, where the new hole was drilled, the material has a thickness of approx. 2 mm only, and that's by far not enough to hold a rack tom safely for a longer time (and while playing).

I solved the problem by using the genuine hole (!) and drilling it out to 8 mm (previous: 6 mm), using a 8 mm screw then.

You know that you can adjust the damper in two ways?

turning the 'one touch tone control' shifter = damper ON/ OFF and

turning the round knob (outside) only = adjustment of the pressure of the felt damper afterwards.

Ralf,

Thanks for your details.

Indeed, the tombrackets aren't the most reliable part on this set.

On the dampers:

I've played around for some time now, and have tried both adjustment levels.

Though, at low dampening levels (little contact to the drumhead), the damper will vibrate, making an awful noise. At higher dampening levels (more contact), I get this change in pitch, leaving me with an awful noise too.

That's why I still think the damper is in the wrong spot for the 12 and 13" toms. Or maybe it is too big for the job. I searched around for the right muffling with some moongel and the most appropriate place for muffling was much more close to the rim. Confirming the damper might muffle in the worng spot.

But perhaps it also depends on the drumhead tension?? The pretty low tension I usually apply might not suit with this type of mufflers.

So your damper is rattling.

I've stopped that noise by putting 3M textile adhesive tape between all spaces where metal touches metal:

- on the bottom side of the felt plate (next where it is fixed and

- also I've put some tape between nut and metal (I mean the nut that tightens the metal clip).

Thanks everyone!

I recently viewed my daughter's "friend's" set in her trunk for about 30 seconds. It is bad. The black wrap is ripped and bubbled. The hardware is dented and scratched. It has a badge resembling a golf course flag. That's about the only part of this kit that looks good.I lent the money to my daughter for her "friend" in hopes of patching up our relationship. It didn't work. Knowing that this "friend" could care less about his drums and his obligation to me breaks my heart.His/my drums have potential but, it doesn't look rosey. The "friend" is a less than reputable person who cares only for himself. my daughter of course, doesn't see it that way. To her, he is a romantic "bad boy" despite the drugs and lack of employment. I'm sorry for venting but, you guys have become friends over the past year. I apologize.

I too have some bollero drums, not in the best shape as the bass drum and tom are missing the bottom heads. Although these could be found, they are a diamond blue. I am looking to sell them does anyone have an estimation on there worth? Thanks ill see about posting pics tmw!
