Blue/Olive Pointy Badge Serial # Question Last viewed: 23 seconds ago

Hey Guys,

I am sorry for the question I am about to ask, because I'm sure it has been asked before, but I couldn't find any info in the postings.... So, here goes...

I have a few acrolite snare drums with B/O Pointy badges. I am trying to determine the date of the drums based on the serial number, but there seems to be a hole in the sequencing and I am hoping someone can clear this up for me.

When you look at the serial number page posted on the Vintage Drum Site it shows the following:

Blue & Olive Badges

1969 765xxx - 834xxx

1970 out of sequence,unnunmered

1971 835xxx - 895xxx

1972 896xxx - 916xxx

1976 917xxx - 1290xxx

1978 xxxxxxx

1979 xxxxxxx - 2013537

Here is my question.

If the numbers in 1972 end at 916xxx, and they start at 917xxx in 1976, what numbers were they using between 1973 to 1975?

Does anyone have information on the drums made in these years? Because based on the chart above, either Ludwig didn't make any drums during those years, or they were using some other numbering sequence.

Also, there is no information for 1977.

If anyone has any information on this, I would be very, very gratefull if you would share.

Thanks,

Randy :)

You don't date a drum or a kit solely based on serial numbers. There are several different serial number lists. There's also fit and finish and hardware and shells. All this goes into dating a drum or a kit.

I think that it is generally recognized that the serial number date guide for the 1970s Ludwigs is incomplete at best. There are not very many reports of drums with serial numbers and dates upon which to base a guide. I would suggest that the drums from 1973 through 1975 and 1977 all had serial numbers, but that when the date guide was developed for inclusion in Rob Cook's Ludwig Book (the source of the vintagedrumguide information you cite) there were no reports of drums from those years.

I have been gathering information from serialized Ludwig drums from the 60s and 70s and hope to be able to present a date guide that will be based upon many more drums than those currently available. I have collected information from almost 700 drums so far, from 1963 through 1972. I believe at this point in my research that the practice of date stamping the interiors of shells was eliminated or severely curtailed. There are still some reports of drums for which there are reliable reports of the original year of purchase after 1972 which can be of some guidance. For a brief period in 1971-72, paper labels were used, often with date stamps, but often with a date code, the logic of which I have not yet decifered.

Collecting information about the following for ongoing research projects:
Gretsch drums with serial numbers,
Ludwig Keystone and B/O badge drums with serial numbers and date stamps,
Ludwig Standards from 1968-73, and
Ludwigs with paper labels from 1971-72

Thought I would throw this out there. I just got a Ludwig Acro and it has a pointy badge, and date stamped inside the shell. Serial number, 837094. Hope this helps out with the research.
