Blue residue

I'm working on a Slingerland Radio King snare from around 1940 and find this strange blue residue around the edge of the badge and inside in various places on the shell. Anybody have a clue what this is? Many thanks for any insight.

It could be just a fungus growing on there?

It's weird. Looks like a blue powder but it doesn't rub off. Mostly around the holes and a bit on the edges. Not a big deal but nothing I've seen before.

Sounds to me like some sort of electrolysis. Badge may have been next to some sort of metal?

My best educated guess is that the "blue stuff' is copper sulfate kinda like rust oxidation on ferrous (iron based) materials. It probably came from the brass badge reacting to the air for 50 years. Brass is an alloy composed of both copper and zinc. you can safely remove it with a product called CLR...which stands for calcium, lime, and rust....works great.

Here are a couple of pics to show this mystery blue. Glen, your guess could make sense as these holes came in contact with nickel plated lugs. But it's also in places on the wood on the inside of the shell, no where in contact with metal. Maybe it just spreads?

I think if it feels sticky it'd be fungus/mold otherwise it's the electrolysis/oxidation?

Maybe some old wax that turned blue over time?
