Blue Onyx Crazy!

Loading...

As a young aspiring drummer, I just thought Rogers was the coolest, and Blue Onyx was the coolest finish offered by Rogers. I decided to go find the drums I wanted as a kid.

The core of the kit I bought, 12, 16, 20 was all original wrap and chrome from (est.) 1965. I added a 14 X 10 and a 13 X 9. These were Fullerton drums. Then, I found a really nice Wood Dynasonic in Blue Onyx, probably pre Fullerton. I was told 1967 but no label inside and serial numbers aren't reliable for dating Rogers I have read.

I've also added an alternate Fullerton era 24 X 14 kick that is now re wrapped to Blue Onyx.

Yes, vintage Rogers drums are the coolest! Your 12, 16, 20 is the very popular Headliner kit. I've got the same one, but in blue sparkle. I also converted a 12x15 marching tenor drum to a floor tom! Enjoy your kit...and thanks for posting!

Mark is right on the money. A Buddy Rich Headliner in blue onyx (with extras). Very, very nice! I have the same kit, but with a smaller floor tom and a PowerTone. the Dynasonic in that finish is a real sweet piece. When you were thinking blue onyx back in the day, I was thinking red because of the cataloged Citadel. But I like the blue just as much at this juncture.

Thanks Mark and Dan. I was blown away at how great these drums sound! I also added a '73 Fullerton 24 X 14 to use when I need a little more whomp! Here is the same kit with that kick. Precision Drum in NY did a terrific job taking the old Koa finish off and putting on the Blue Onyx.....

Serial number are reliable. There are no paper tags inside oval badge Dyna-Sonics. If your drum is from 67, serial number will be in the 9-10 thousand range. There is a lot of crap still in print about Rogers that amounts to no more than made up myth.

Thanks Mr. Toast. I feel like people on this forum actually understand the excitement / compulsion to be caretakers of this history.

Thanks Ploughman; the S/N on my drum is 11921. So, Ohio or Fullerton is the question. And if 11 thousand range puts it to 1968, i think it could be either Fullerton or Ohio correct? Cheers, Drumact
