Black Label Paiste 2002's

Question:

When the black label 2002's went into production, did Paiste label all their rides with the word "RIDE"? In that same breath, are the crashes labeled "CRASH"? A friend of mine has a black label 2002 from 74 by the serial number (6 digit) that only says the words "MEDIUM", it's 20 inches in diameter and just under 1750 grams, I have some of them, and they all say either "CRASH" or "RIDE"

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

Yes this is correct......they were labeled RIDE, CRASH, MEDIUM, HEAVY RIDE, MEDIUM HI HAT, SOUND EDGE HI HAT, HEAVY HI HAT, CHINA, and SPLASH. Later they added the FLAT RIDE, and the BELL cymbals. They still offer these models today and to me they sound pretty much the same as the earlier black label cymbals. Mediums were considered basically a crash/ride even though they never called them that.

The MEDIUM is going to be thicker with more sustain than the CRASH for a given size cymbal.

The china was actually labeled CHINA TYPE in the black label era.

This was a transition era for Paiste. If you go back to the Formula 602's they had PAPERTHIN, THIN, MEDIUM and HEAVY. All these cymbals could be ordered between 14 and 24 with any of those weights. It was up to the drummer to decide what weight he wanted and how he wanted to use the cymbal. The only specific ride offered was the MEDIUM RIDE which is a fairly washy jazzy cymbal with a separated bell sound. Over time Paiste went to the more modern terms like crash, splash, ride, etc.

The 2002 Bell, Splash, Heavy Ride, Heavy Hats and Flat Ride did not come out until 1975. They were not part of the original release in 1971.

Nor were the 17", 19" and 21" sizes. Those didn't come out until late 1978/early 1979.

In 1971

2002s were available in 13"- 18", 20", 22" 24" RIDE, CRASH and MEDIUM

13", 14", 15" Hi Hats

14", 15" SE Hats

18", 20", 22" , 24" China Type
