Hi ..can anyone tell me the difference between a black beauty 79 b/o badge (pointy) and a 79 b/o badge (rounded) corners..(assuming they did both in that final (pointy year) before the late eighties re issue. people often talk about "is the badge pointy" as if it were more sort after ..im new to black beauties and cant, seem to find an answer...also were the shells the same on both...in need of help here!
Black beauty confusion!
Chris,
Regarding the "sharp-cornered vs. round-corned" B/O badges...I think it's safe to say that it's inconsequential to the sound or build-quality of the drum...but, rather a slight modification made to the pre-existing sharp-cornered parallelogram shape of the original B/O badge design after complaints of the sharp corners popping up over time and stabbing people and getting snagged on things and causing cosmetic damage to the badge as a result. They started to round off the corners to alleviate the problem. It kind of changed the aesthetic appeal of the badge for some people...I guess you could say they...pardon the expression..."cut corners" in order to avoid having to entirely re-design the badge. Thus, to purist collectors, the sharp-cornered B/O badge is the real representation of that era's (1970-1979) aesthetic sense.
I know...it's a *ahem* small point, but, that's the way collectors are! ;)

oh my goodness....
i just read the reply from o-lugs, and had to add my point, of view....
you're a very funny guy....you got me cracking up...
had to hand it to you, had to let you know, you made me chuckle up right good.
that's all, just had to say that, very well done.
thanks....
oh, as for the badges, the pointy corners where from the earlier days, and came before the rounded ones. which implies they are older drum that have them.
however they did not put use them in any proper order. they just dumped them into boxes and used them at random. sometimes there would be a few badges in the boxes and would be covered up by new ones upon refilling the boxes.
that kept the older, lower numbered ones unused. which put the entire serial numbers out of order. that's why it's not so exacting.
o-lugs is right about the reason they rounded the corners. as well as the higher value of the pointed corner badges. it's not going to make any difference as to how the drum sounds, plays, was built, or any thing like that...
way to go o-lugs, you rule
