Big R Londoner kit - worth a re-wrap? Last viewed: 2 minutes ago

Thanks, Ploughman. Obviously, no collector or vintage guy would touch it, but I though maybe the "wow" factor of a cool sparkle finish on an old kit might win out w/ somebody. I'm not looking to replicate an original Rogers finish, but just a quality replacement wrap.I know Big R's aren't super desirable, but it came w/ a package of other candy, so now i'm kinda stuck w/ it. I prob have about 300 into it - if I could wrap it for 100 and sell it locally for 500, I'd be thrilled. Worst case scenario, I could part it out and at least break even.Does anyone have any experience dealing w/ these wraps? FWIW, he has a lot of good reviews. http://www.ebay.com/usr/sparkledrumwraps

dexter74: That sparkle stuff is like dumping sawdust in an old transmission. It's okay for now, but that's about it. One trip out into any heat, anything out of it's fragile ordinary, and it's good looks are only a memory.

If you have to do that though, do what I do. I've made more 'kits' out of modern orphan junk drums than you can imagine. I use ORACAL gloss black. It's thin, so it's best to put it on over a wrap. The only real reason I use it is I can get it locally from a large outlet / wholesaler.

Like I said, it's thin and won't hold up to much abuse, but it works for all those orphan Excel, Gammon, Sound Percussion, etc junk orphan drums.

Remember: Your mileage may vary.

I got your pics bigger.... that wrap isn't repairable in my opinion. The wrap should be removed with ease. The glue can be removed with a good solvent. Sand them down and put a good finish on them. Natural Maple was a factory color..... a lacquer. Save the badges and grommets and put them back on. Getting the badge off the wrap can be tricky, but it can be done. Any good cabinet shop could probably shoot your lacquer.

Thanks, Ploughman. Yeah, the current wrap is f**ked. I'm still tempted to try the sparklewrap, only because the drums [sadly] aren't worth much to begin with. You think I could fetch $400-500 if I stained them up nice and polished all the hardware? Thanks again!
