Beware....Jim Petty's Email Has Been Hacked

I received an email a couple days ago from Jim Petty's business email address (JP2 Creations). Since Jim is a long time friend, I opened the email. I was asked if I could do a favor for Jim. I replied that I would if I could.

The next response from that email address said that Jim needed to buy a an I-tunes gift certificate for his niece's birthday. But, he was traveling right now. Could I buy it for him, and he would send me the money for it.

DING DING DING...SIRENS....AIR HORN...FLASHING WARNING LIGHTS.

I just knew that, if I agreed to do this, the next email would ask me to which checking account did I want the repayment for my purchase sent to. So, I courteously told "Jim" that I was unable to do this because I'm self-quarantining. He than said that I could do it all online.

That was the last communication. I did not respond. My hunch that this was a phishing attempt was verified when I received another very similar email today from someone else with whom I had previously done some online business transactions.

BEWARE! Don't fall for this scam.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

I received the same email a few days ago! The English seemed a bit odd to me, so rather than replying, I gave Jim a call. He confirmed that his email had been hacked and was happy to hear that I did not respond to the message. The day I called, Jim said that he had already taken about 65 calls from friends and not one of them had answered the email! Jim spent most of the day creating new passwords and dealing with the fallout from this attack. I just goes to show that none of us are safe from hackers!
