Best bassdrum head for 22*14 3ply Ludwig....Studio and Live!

Hey Guys

I have been wondering what is your experience with the drumheads for a 22*14 Ludwig 3ply bassdrum. I have now 2 powerstroke 3', front and back.

This sound very short and punchy. Recording in studio, the engeneers never had any problems with it. Especially by adding a subwoofer the bassdrum always got good result without any adjustment.

However, I must admit that comparing to the toms the bassdrum sounds quite dead. Last time I went recording the engeneer told me the toms sounded amazing, but never heard a thing about the bassdrum.

So my question, should I try other head combo. Should I go to powerstroke 3 batter and Ambassador resonant. Or maybe Ambassador - Ambassador combo? I am not considering evans emad or so....like that I could stay as well with the PS3 combo.

I'm sure I can get much fatter sound with other combo's than te more 'dead' sound now. But maybe it could effect the recording situations? Hmmmm

What do you think? Experiences in studio and live? (Especially studio :) )

Thanks a lot!!!!! :)

Ilya,

Greetings. It would be best if we knew what style of music and what type of sound you are looking for. Otherwise, no one will have any idea how to answer. In general terms most guys would opt for a thinner resonant head.

When you say "add a subwoofer" are you talking about the speakers used for playback or are you talking about using a speaker as a mic like a Yamaha Subkick?

Keep in mind that a lot if what you hear as a kick drum over the past 30-40 years is very electronically enhanced. Certainly more so than any other drum in your kit. Studio situations vary. Even today guys will record with a single headed kick full of foam on one end of the spectrum to wide open with an additional kick drum in front of that on the other end of the spectrum. With drums, if it works, do it.

thanks for reply. Well I am using my Ludwig especially for pop and pop-rock music. I tune my toms also very low.

By subwoofer I mean something like Yamaha Subkick.

I would like to get a little bit more resonance I think but in a way that the drum is sounding with more depth NOT more open in a jazzy way.

I use PS3 on almost all my drums, but each drum have different result, also with different resonant heads.

I have tried PS4 with diplomat fiberskyn reso on yamaha 20*16 maple drum what worked horribly bad.....so I am thinking to swtich this one to PS3-PS3 combo.

On the other hand my Ludwig seems to sound too dead with the PS3-PS3 combo.

So I am a little bit confused! But I am certainly searching for a pop, pop-rock sound for my bassdrum, because this drum is the only one who in my oppinion can handle this kind off sound next to my 20" yamaha mca and my 22" recording custom that has absolutely no depth.

I can add that I have the feeling that my bassdrum don't get the same result as my toms with this head combo. That I can get more depth out of it!

I have a CS Black Dot on my 3-ply 70's Ludwig bass drums (20 and 22). The 20 sounded choked with a PS3 but sang like a bird with the Black Dot.

It was NOT a small difference, and so I didn't even try a PS3 with the 22.

This seems very 70's indeed! Must be great to try out. Don't you get a similar sound like tony williams had on his yellow DW drums? (you ca see on zildjian days) a lot of attack, but not so much depth?

or can you still get a lot of depth with this head?

Plenty of attack AND depth. I get nothing but compliments on the sound. people can't believe the power of that 20" kick. Black Dot and Ludwig logo head on the front.

What I don't really understand about some of the drum "fads" is that thin shells have been the rage for a long time now, yet no one bats an eye about the PS3/Superkick heads as being maybe a bit much on the thick side. On some drums, those heads sound sublime; on others not so much.

Sounds very interesting. Is your Ludwig logo fronthead an ambassador?

Because mine is a powerstroke I guess...you think that would work?

The PS3 is a little bit on the thick side I guess, a little bit too dry. but sounds good for recording or micing, but still possible to get more depth.

Is your head coated or Clear?

Plus what do you think about this heads for the toms? I must say untill now, the ambassador head is the only head that fit's on the floortom, because it has a little bit thicker side where the coating comes together. So I'm a bit afraid to order new heads, maybe they even won't fit.
